A police officer with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department in Indiana and two others were hospitalized after a high-speed pursuit ended in a head-on crash Wednesday, authorities said.
Around 6 p.m., officers with the Lake County, Ind. Sheriff’s Department began pursuing a vehicle that was driving at a high rate of speed northbound on Ralston Street in the Gary area, Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said in a statement.
The driver then struck an officer’s patrol vehicle head-on near the intersection of 9th Avenue and Ralston Street, authorities said.
The driver was placed in custody and taken to a local hospital for evaluation, authorities said. A passenger in the vehicle was extricated by emergency responders and also transported to a local hospital.
The officer, who was taken to a local hospital to be treated for multiple cuts and other injuries, is expected to recover, authorities said.
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing, authorities said.
