When it comes to the food we share with our families, prioritizing health and safety is always a priority. And while product recalls can be inconvenient sometimes, they’re an important way for brands to show consumers that they care about our well-being.
This week, Primavera Nueva Inc. is expanding a voluntary recall of certain tamale products due to potential contamination. As the investigation continues, the company is working closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to rectify the situation as quickly as possible. That said, products are still likely in consumers’ homes, so exercising caution is strongly advised.

According to the official recall notice, Primavera is recalling certain lots of its 4-count tamales due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The products were distributed by Primavera Nueva Inc. to retail stores in California and Nevada and were produced between October 10, 2024, and October 10, 2025. While the recall has now been expanded to include the following products, Primavera has indicated that no additional items are at risk:

What is Listeria Monocytogenes?
Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes deadly illness in young children, older adults, and anyone with a weakened immune system. For most healthy people, an infection may only cause short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, stomach pain, or diarrhea. But for pregnant people, listeria can be much more dangerous, increasing the risk of miscarriage or stillbirth.
Next Steps for Consumers
At the moment, no other Primavera Nueva products have been flagged as affected, and, fortunately, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the contamination. The FDA identified the issue during a routine inspection, finding that earlier production records did not consistently verify the internal cooking temperatures needed to control potential biological hazards, including Listeria monocytogenes.
Primavera states that the issue has been fully corrected, and enhanced cooking-temperature monitoring and verification have been in place since October 11, 2025. That said, anyone with tamales carrying date codes 10/22 (2024) through 10/22 (2025) should not consume them and should discard the products entirely.
