Early 2000s Indie Rock Artist Announces First Album in Eight Years

After not releasing new music for eight years, Mirah is back.

Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn, best known as Mirah, announced on Instagram on Wednesday morning that she is releasing her sixth studio album, Dedication, next month. This is her first project with brand new music since Understanding in 2018. In 2020, to honor her debut solo album, You Think It's Like This but Really It's Like This, for its 20th anniversary, Mirah released a remastered version of the record along with covers by Mount Eerie, Half Waif, Hand Habits, Palehound, Shamir, Sad13, Allison Crutchfield and more.

In addition, Mirah released Dedication's lead single, "After the Rain," on Wednesday as well, which is out now on all streaming platforms.

"I feel so grateful and honored to be able to share the news that my new album, Dedication, will be released on February 20th! The new single, After the Rain, is out today," Mirah wrote in her Instagram caption. "This album was a long time coming, as it did through lots of changes and experiences, some joyful and some devastating. I know you all can relate."

The album is set to have 10 new tracks and Flock Of Dimes, Hand Habits and Andrew Maguire playing as the backing band. According to Stereogum, the upcoming album is from a place of mourning because two weeks after Understanding was released, Mirah's father passed away. At the time, she was also pregnant and about to head on tour.

"Experiencing the greatest grief of my life and the greatest joy of my life in such close proximity definitely contributed to the genesis of Dedication," she told Stereogum.

Mirah performs onstage with the Portland Cello Project on the LiveWire Radio Show at the Elsinore Theater on August 22, 2009 in Salem, Oregon, United States.

The 51-year-old singer got her start in the music scene in the 1990s in Olympia, Washington, after moving there to attend Evergreen State College. Before releasing her first two albums, You Think It's Like This but Really It's Like This and Advisory Committee, through K Records, she joined psychedelic pop group The Microphones in 1999. The group eventually split up in 2003, but had multiple reunions over the past 20 years.

Mirah received a lot of success as a solo artist, thanks to her 2009 album (a)spera peaking on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart at No. 46, and her 2011 collaborative album with Thao Nguyen peaked at No. 7. Her most popular songs include "Special Death" with 18 million streams on Spotify and "Gone Sugaring."

Dedication will be released via Double Double Whammy on Feb. 20. "After the Rain" is out now.
