While we await final word on the Edward Cabrera trade, the Chicago Cubs offered up a modest move, claiming lefty Ryan Rolison off of waivers from the Chicago White Sox. It’s the Cubs’ first waiver claim of the offseason – expected a lot of those, typically – and it brings the 40-man roster up to 37.
Rolison, 28, was a 2018 first round pick of the Rockies, working his way up through their system, dealing with injuries, and ultimately converting from starting to relief in 2024. He reached the big leagues this past season, but put up a 7.02 ERA over 42.1 innings, with a 13.0% K rate and 10.4% walk rate. Maybe, uh, getting him out of Colorado will turn things around.
Ryan Rolison doesn’t throw particularly hard (93ish MPH), but his fastball does cut quite a bit, and he throws all of a curveball, slider, and changeup. Maybe some bones there to work with.
Of note, Rolison did put up MUCH better results in relief at Triple-A last year, so he is probably one of those borderline guys for whom one change in a new organization could help him get over that hump at the Triple-A/MLB border. The Cubs obviously love taking low-risk, low-cost swings on those types.
Rolison does have one option year remaining, but it’s possible the Cubs will try at some point to do what the White Sox were trying to do (and the Braves before them!) – pass him through waivers, and outright him to Triple-A. If successful, you get to keep the guy effectively on a minor league deal for one season.
