Montez Sweat is Playoff Ready

Montez Sweat noticed something different at Halas Hall on Tuesday.

“We’re usually packing the cars up, sending everything back home to the home base, and getting ready for the offseason,” Sweat said during his Tuesday media availability at Halas Halll. “It feels good preparing for the postseason right now.”

I’d like to imagine that Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Poles had the postseason in mind when he swung a deal to acquire Montez Sweat at the 2023 NFL Trade Deadline and handed him a huge contract extension just days later. With that in mind, it would be nice to see Sweat at his best on Saturday when the Bears host the Green Bay Packers in the third playoff game between the two long-time rivals.

Montez Sweat could be the X-factor in an extended Bears playoff run

Stopping the run and pressuring the quarterback are two essentials to winning playoff games. For what it’s worth, those have been areas of strength in Montez Sweat’s game during his career. And, statistically, this year was no different.

Sweat finished the regular season with 10 sacks, 13 tackles-for-loss, and 17 quarterback hits. He also forced three fumbles and batted down four passes. Pro Football Focus’ advanced analytics note that he grades out well in defensive stops (37 ranks 5th at his position), solo tackles (35, ranks 7th), hurries (36, ranks 15th), and total pressures (53, ranks 20th). Sweat’s 70.9 overall grade checks in at 42nd among 115 qualifying edge rushers, while his 71.3 pass rush grade comes in at 38th.

All in all, it was a respectable season for the 29-year-old edge defender. But if Chicago’s football team is going to make a deep postseason run, it will need Montez Sweat to level up his game.

While I understand that past performance has no bearing on future outcomes, this feels like a good place to point out that Montez Sweat does have some playoff experience under his belt. Sweat played 53 snaps in the Washington Football Team’s 31-23 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a playoff game played on Jan. 9, 2021. You can check out that box score here if you’d like to take a trip down memory lane.

In that game, Sweat collected one sack and a pair of QB hits on Bucs quarterback Tom Brady to go along with two solo tackles and two tackles-for-loss. That is the type of stat-stuffing performance I’ve grown accustomed to seeing from sweat. And it is the type of line I’d like to see next to his name when the dust settles from Saturday’s playoff game against the Packers. WIth that being said, just know that it will not be a walk in the park for Montez Sweat on Saturday.

IT’S CHICAGO: MATT FORTE BACKS THE BEARS IN SHOWDOWN WITH PACKERS

If the Bears are going to triumph against the Packers, Sweat needs to win his one-on-one battle with Green Bay right tackle Zach Tom. A fourth-round pick (140th overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft, Tom has been one of the Packers’ best and most consistent offensive linemen. The Wake Forest product is coming off of an injury, but he still owns an 83.5 overall grade that ranks as tied for the eighth best among offensive tackles. His 81.9 run blocking grade comes in at 14th among 87 qualifying tackles, while his 78.5 grade is the 15th-best among 86 qualifiers. So no matter how you slice it, Tom is a formidable foe.
