Rideshare users in certain parts of Chicago will have to pay more under a new surcharge that took effect on Tuesday.
Under the “Ground Transportation Tax TNP Congestion Zone Surcharge,” single rides with a pickup or drop-off in a newly defined congestion zone will cost an additional $1.50 cents per vehicle between 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., 7 days a week. That’s 37 cents more than last year.
For shared rides — where passengers are pooled with others heading in the same direction — a 60-cent surcharge will be implemented from 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The prices only apply in two congestion zones:
Zone 1 covers a large portion of downtown, including the Loop, River North and West Loop. It stretches from Pilsen to 31st Street Beach and then along Lake Michigan to near Andersonville. Zone 2 runs from East 60th Street to South Cottage Grove Avenue and East Hyde Park Boulevard.
In response to the added fee, multiple riders told NBC Chicago they may start walking more.
“Vegas does the same thing…and it is getting way higher than we all expected,” rideshare user Chris Rey said.
“I am still going to take it,” Tyjane Williams, another rider, said. “But it is crazy.”
The surcharge is included in Chicago’s 2026 budget plan and looks to generate $65 million in revenue. Rideshare companies have been vocal in their opposition to the tax, with Uber saying it disproportionately affects everyday customers, especially low-income riders. Lyft said Chicagoans already face some of the highest rideshare taxes and fees in the country.
“I live in the South Loop. The prices are already high,” rideshare user Tory Bazille said. “Will I be able to afford it now that the changes are taking place?
