Avalanche captain Gabe Landeskog will ‘miss some weeks’ with upper-body injury

TAMPA, Fla. — Gabe Landeskog will “miss some weeks” with his upper-body injury, but Colorado Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said it’s too early to rule him out of the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Devon Toews is also week-to-week with an upper-body injury, but he is expected to be ready to play again before Landeskog.

“He’s going to some weeks,” Bednar said. “I don’t know exactly how long. We’ll have a better idea when we get back. He’ll get looked at we’ll evaluate and see how he’s feeling, but he’s going to miss some time.”

Landeskog crashed into the net and then the end boards Sunday night against the Florida Panthers in South Florida. He had played in every game this year after missing 1,020 days and three full regular seasons with right knee issues.

Concern for Gabe Landeskog’s health goes beyond Avalanche: ‘He’s too important to the game of hockey’

The Avs captain was named to Sweden's roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics in June, when he had just played two AHL games and five games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs in his return, but his play for the Avs this year made him not only a lock, but a potential impact contributor for the Swedes.

Sweden's first game in Milan is 36 days from Tuesday. There was a report in his home country early Tuesday that Sweden coach Sam Hallam had spoken with Landeskog and was not going to remove him from the roster at this time.

"I think that's too early to tell at this point," Bednar said. "The injury is fresh. It just happened. You've got to give him some time and see how he deals with it, see exactly what the prognosis is. Then they'll be able to set a clear timeline.

"Really hoping for Landy's sake that he's back and able to compete in that, because I know he's been looking forward to it. We'll just see what time will tell, I guess."

Toews was injured the game before, in Raleigh against the Carolina Hurricanes. He left that contest early in the third period, missed about 10 minutes of game time and returned for two late shifts. But he was not able to play Sunday against the Panthers and is also now week-to-week with an upper-body injury.

Like Landeskog, Toews has been selected to play for his country (Canada) at the Olympics, and the injury immediately led to speculation and concern about his availability for the Canadians.

"I think Devon is a little different," Bednar said. "I'd say week-to-week, but his injury is definitely not as serious. He felt pretty good when we sent him back to Denver. He'll get evaluated. We should have a little bit tighter timeline on him, but I don't think it's day-to-day at this point.

"If we can get him back in a couple of weeks, I think that would be the best-case scenario, which still gives him some time for the Olympics."
