Trailheads near Estes Park reopened Monday morning after an unsuccessful search for a third mountain lion closed following a suspected mountain lion attack last week, according to officials.
The Garden Gate, Gravel Pit and Piper Meadows trailheads around Crosier Mountain, south of Glenhaven, reopened after being closed for multiple days following the suspected attack, according to a Monday morning U.S. Forest Service post on X.
Hikers saw a mountain lion near a woman who was lying on the ground at around 12:15 p.m. on the Crosier Mountain Trail in unincorporated Larimer County. One of the hikers examined the woman and couldn’t find a pulse.
The identity of the woman and her cause of death have not yet been announced by the Larimer County Coroner’s Office.
Two mountain lions near the scene were euthanized Thursday. A third mountain lion, which was spotted near the scene of the incident, was not found as of Monday morning, said Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesperson Kara Van Hoose in an emailed statement, adding that the search is now closed.
A few Colorado hikers reported mountain lion encounters on the same trail in November, including Glen Haven resident Gary Messina who told The Associated Press that he believed the mountain lion he fought off was the same one that attacked the woman based on its aggressiveness.
