Chevy Chase Explains Abrupt Sitcom Exit After Racial Controversy Resurfaces: Im Not a Racist

In conjunction with the new CNN documentary, I'm Chevy Chase and You're Not, the 82-year-old Chevy Chase clarified his troubled tenure on the hit NBCsitcom, Community, as well as an alleged racial incident that happened during his time on the show.

According to a new interview withThe New York Times, Chase discussed rumors about his reported use of the N-word on the set of Community,an incident that many believe contributed to his eventual departure from the show a short time later.

In said interview, Chase said that the aforementioned incident had nothing to do with his departure from Community, with the 82-year-old Vacation star saying he left simply because he "didn't think [the show] was that good."

“It wasn’t a bad experience," Chase said of his time on Community. "I just didn’t think it was that good, the show."

As longtime fans of the cult-favorite NBC series are sure to know, Chase starred in the first four seasons of Community from 2009 up to 2012.

Though the role saw a brief resurgence in popularity for Chase's career, the Saturday Night Live star's stint on the show came with significant issues backstage, including a highly publicized feud with Community creator Dan Harmon.

“It was too great a misunderstanding of what I was saying and not saying,” Chase said about his Community exit and the recently reported racial incident. “I thought that there was at least one person — and another who, for some ungodly reason, didn’t get me, didn’t know who I was, or didn’t realize for one second I’m not racist. They were too young to be aware of my work. Instead, there was some sort of visceral reaction from them.”

As further proof of Chase's troubled relationship with the Community cast and crew, every cast member who was asked to appear in the CNN documentary bluntly refused (via Variety).

"I was initially disappointed that we didn’t get more people from Community, but there are things people don’t want to talk about," documentary director Marina Zenovich said of the cast member's refusal.
