IT: Welcome to Derry co-showrunner Brad Caleb Kane is opening up about how he unexpectedly landed the singing role in Aladdin. In 1992, Kane says he was far from the typical choice for a Disney animated film, with his ambitions instead focused on becoming a grunge metal star.
In an interview with People, Kane reveals how he grew up on slasher movies and readingStephen King, with every intention of focusing on film after getting accepted into NYU Film School. Before graduating from high school, he got a call for an audition and met with composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman.
"I didn't even know who they were at the time. I didn't really think much of it. They had me read some sides. They had me sing a song, which I realized was 'Proud of Your Boy,' which had since been cut from the movie. And then I went off and lived my life," he said.
Kane has his sights set on touring with his grunge band and had performance opportunities lined up. He and his band were on the road, sleeping on floors in different cities, and performing on stage when he got a callback eight months later.
"I had a band. It was the height of grunge, so I wore a lot of flannel. I did the crowd surfing thing," he said. "I was a different guy."
He was insistent on not wanting to be an actor when his mother called, telling him to get on a flight after one of his band's shows in Chicago. Regardless, he agreed and did a test run alongside Lea Salonga before flying back to his band. Kane had ultimately landed the singing role of Aladdin.
Despite not wanting to be a part of the 1992 classic and Disney not yet reaching the pinnacle of movie fame at the time, Kane admits he looks back at the opportunity with fondness.
"I was just living life in real time. I sang a couple of songs over three recording sessions," he said. "And it became what it became, which is this wonderful legacy that my kids love and that I'm very proud of."
While not venturing fully into acting, Kane is known for being a writer and executive producer for hits like Fringe, Black Sails, Tokyo Vice, and Welcome to Derry. He's also the creator, writer, and executive producer for the upcoming slasher series Crystal Lake.
