IHOP Revives Restaurant ‘Icon’ After Nearly 6 Years

IHOP is undoing a COVID-19 pandemic-era change it introduced that completely changed how guests dined at its restaurants.

On Monday, the popular pancake house welcomed 2026 with a couple of major announcements. The first was confirmation that the diner chain is teaming up with NFL star Malik Nabers to launch its new "Bottomless Pancakes" special all-you-can-eat promotion, but deep within that official announcement was news that IHOP would be bringing back its "iconic" syrup caddies.

IHOP Brings Syrup Caddies Back to Tables After Over 5 Years of Single-Use

Yep, so long are the days of single-serve cups!

The COVID-19 pandemic-era change saw the restaurant chain's refillable, reusable syrup dispensers hidden away to minimize "high-touch" items and mitigate the spread of germs, in accordance with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Other protections taken by IHOP (and other restaurants) included swapping out menus for throw-away paper or plastic versions that could be wiped down and opting for more disposable, single-use items to be tossed between guests.

But now, over five and a half years after it was initially reported that IHOP's iconic syrup caddies would no longer be on tables, the company proudly announced that they would be making a big comeback.

The caddies, typically arranged in groups of four on each table, are filled with one of IHOP's signature syrups: Old-Fashioned, Blueberry, Strawberry, or Butter Pecan.

The company didn't go into too much detail about the caddy (we assume it's staying with the original design most fans are already familiar with, as teased last fall), instead focusing on its new fantasy football-inspired bottomless pancakes promotion and partnership with the 22-year-old New York Giants wide receiver.

"Fantasy football has turned into a cultural obsession rooted in friendly and intense competition, and we saw an opportunity to create real-time engagement by flipping those last-place blues into a winning experience for everyone," IHOP president Lawrence Kim shared in a statement. "At IHOP, we’re continuing to listen, adapt, and deliver fun in unexpected ways. We love bringing people together over our world-famous pancakes, so transforming a viral challenge into a nationwide celebration felt like the perfect fit. Bottomless Pancakes give everyone, even last place finishers, a reason to smile, and that’s what IHOP is all about."

Here's how it works: beginning today (Monday, Jan. 5), customers who purchase select breakfast combos at participating locations can score free bottomless pancakes. According to the press release, the promotion is inspired by the “last-place punishment” trend embraced by fantasy football leagues across the country: the loser spends 24 hours at IHOP, eating nothing but pancakes. Each pancake devoured shaves one hour off the clock.

    Qualifying breakfast combos include:

"I’m excited to partner with IHOP to flip the infamous 24-Hour Challenge," Nabers added. "It’s the ultimate win for fantasy players and pancake fans out there, like me. Now everyone wins with Bottomless Pancakes."

Although the promotion is only bottomless at participating locations for a limited time (prices vary), IHOP's syrup caddies will be permanently returning nationwide in the coming weeks, if not already.
