‘Even Stevens’ Alum Alleges He Was Fired for Reporting ‘Suspected Pedophile’

Even Stevens alum Steven Anthony Lawrence has addressed allegedly losing his job at Universal Studios Hollywood for reporting a “suspected pedophile.”

Lawrence, 35, claimed via Instagram on Saturday, January 3, that he’d initially held off posting about his exit from the theme park but now felt he needed to go public.

“I delayed posting this for about a month because I was hoping we could find some sort of amicable solution because I absolutely loved performing and dancing with all you amazing people,” the actor explained via Instagram. “It is with a heavy heart I have to announce that my time with Universal Studios has ended.”

Lawrence — who played Bernard “Beans” Aranguren on Even Stevens — alleged that he lost his job for reporting “a suspected pedofile [sic] around children.” He did not provide any specific evidence about his accusation.

“While I will truly miss my job I cannot be associated with an organization or people that don’t care about performer or guest safety while numerous people continue to get hurt,” he claimed.

The actor closed his post with a warning for theme park fans, writing: “With what I know, I WILL NEVER ALLOW MY KID TO GO TO UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOLLYWOOD. Be safe everyone.”

Universal Studios issued a statement to Us Weekly regarding Lawrence’s claims.

“We have investigated and reviewed the concerns brought forward by this former employee and they were found to be inaccurate and without merit,” a spokesperson for the film studio said in a statement. “We take all employee concerns seriously and have established processes for raising any concerns without fear of retaliation.”

Alongside his post, Lawrence shared a photo of his Universal Studios Hollywood name badge propped up against a Toad hat from Super Mario Bros.

Lawrence received support from his Even Stevens costar Christy Carlson Romano for speaking out with his warning.

“Good for you Steven,” Carlson Romano, 41, replied to her former castmate.

Other Instagram users credited Lawrence for trying to “keep the community safe” and taking a “stand against injustice” in the theme park world.

Lawrence had a prolific career as a child actor, memorably starring opposite Mike Myers in the 2003 live-action adaptation of The Cat in the Hat and appearing in Will Ferrell’s 2005 soccer comedy Kicking & Screaming.

He was around 9-years-old when Disney Channel producers recruited him to audition for the role of the Stevens family’s annoying next-door neighbor Bernard “Beans” Aranguren on Even Stevens.

“I had a schtick when I was a kid: I would always tell a joke at the end of an audition,” Lawrence told Vice in 2021. “So, I told the Even Stevens producer a joke, and when I got the sides for the next callback, my joke was written in the script. I’m going, ‘Oh God, I hope I get the part because it’s going to be awkward if my joke’s in here and I’m not.’”

Lawrence remembered that Beans was only supposed to appear in one episode of Even Stevens but was “written into the next episode and the next episode” because the creative team liked him.

“I’d kind of go and hang out with [the writers] so they knew who I was, and maybe, hopefully, get back into it,” he said.

After Even Stevens, Lawrence appeared in Cheaper by the Dozen and Weeds before putting his acting career on hold when his father was diagnosed with cancer. (His mother and father both died from the disease, according to Vice.)

“You’re being a caregiver, you’ve got to be there to change diapers. And you can’t do that when you’re on auditions,” he told the publication in 2021. “That’s physically impossible. It just wouldn’t work.”

In recent years, Lawrence has resumed acting in independent movies and co-hosted the “Even More Stevens Podcast” alongside Romano and their costar Nick Spano in 2023.
