Jesy Nelson, member of former girl group Little Mix, has shared some devastating news with her 9.6 million Instagram followers.
On Sunday, Jan. 4, Nelson, 34, revealed that her 8-month-old twin daughters have been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1. Ocean Jade and Story Monroe were born on May 15, 2025.
Nelson said that her mom pointed out that the girls hadn't been moving their legs much, but the singer admitted that she didn't think much of it, given that her little ones were in the NICU and had been developing more slowly than other kids their age. However, the girls showed some other concerning symptoms in the weeks that followed.
"After the most grueling three, four months, and endless appointments, the girls have now been diagnosed with a severe muscular disease called SMA type 1," an emotional Nelson said in a video posted to her Instagram feed.
View this post on Instagram"We were told that they’re probably never gonna be able to walk, they probably will never regain their neck strength so they will be disabled. And so the best thing we can do right now is to get them treatment and then just hope for the best," Nelson explained.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, there is no cure for SMA, which is described as a genetic condition that causes muscle weakness.
"SMA involves the loss of a specific type of nerve cell in your spinal cord called lower motor neurons, or anterior horn cells. These cells control muscle movement. Without these motor neurons, muscles don’t receive the nerve signals that make them move," the organization says.
Untreated, life expectancy drops to age two.
"I have to be grateful because at the end of the day, they're still here and that's the main thing and they’ve had the treatment,” Nelson continued, adding, "and I truly believe that my girls will defy all the odds and, with the right help, they will fight this."
Hundreds of comments popped up on Nelson's post as fans have been sending love and prayers to her, her fiancé, Zion Foster, and their precious baby girls.
"My little boy has sma type 1 and he’s nearly 9, it’s a devastating shock but the treatments have come so far now, your girls will do amazingly. There’s a huge sma community now with SMA Uk Sending love xxx," one person said.
"My heart is breaking for the pain you are in right now. Sending so many prayers and love to your beautiful girls," another comment read.
