ELLAND ROAD — Ruben Amorim’s demeanour has changed. And the problems run far deeper than any of us imagined.
Amorim’s appointment marked a change of ethos at Manchester United. The club’s first head coach, rather than manager, light years after all their rivals, would finally start the process of rousing this sleeping giant from its perennial slumber.
The new head coach’s profile seemed like the perfect fit. With former sporting director Dan Ashworth, director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada leading the revolution in the boardroom, Amorim would be left to spend time on the training ground perfecting his ideology, leaving experts in their field to do the rest.
Fourteen months in and an internal power struggle is brewing, one Amorim has brought into the public domain. It seems being told what to do is not sitting well after all.
“To start with that, I noticed that you received selective information about everything,” Amorim snapped after his side’s well-deserved 1-1 draw at Leeds United.
“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United. And that is clear. I know that my name is not [Thomas] Tuchel, it’s not [Antonio] Conte, it’s not [Jose] Mourinho but I’m the manager of Manchester United. And it’s going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decides to change.
“That was my point. I want to finish with that. I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy comes here to replace me. I just want to say that I’m going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach.
“That was the deal. That is my job. Not to be a coach. If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticisms of everything, we need to change the club.
“I came here to be the manager, not to be the coach. In every department – the scouting department, the sporting director needs to do their job, I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on.”
The i Paper understands talks between Amorim and Wilcox this week did not go well.
The normally jovial Amorim appeared for his Friday media duties looking like he had seen the life sucked out of his project.

One reason was Amorim had essentially been told that there would not be any investment in the January transfer window, with long-term targets in the summer the focus.
Amorim had always insisted he was on board with such an approach, that the club must learn from previous mistakes in the transfer market.
A threadbare squad and United’s unsuccessful pursuit of Antoine Semenyo changed his mind.
There have been doubts among those in the setup over Amorim’s system for some time.
Wilcox and Berrada had been keen to see the besieged boss move on from his 3-4-3 formation, given how unsuccessful it has been.
Amorim’s defiance in recent games, as he returned to his beloved system after a brief hiatus against Newcastle, is telling.
It is not the first time Amorim has been public with his displeasure with how things are going.
Last season he labelled his own team the worst in the club’s history, recently insisted he cannot be a success without the right investment in the right areas, before his refusal to be drawn on questions over his system and recruitment on Friday said more than 1000 words could.

All is not well. While he is not under any direct pressure, differences in vision could leave Amorim an isolated figure. Results have been better this term, but not by much.
United co-owners Ineos has always insisted it wants to give Amorim time. It believes the United restoration project to be so epic that there is no quick fix.
Calling out your bosses, however, only tends to end one way.
