Manchester United battled to a commendable 1-1 draw away to bitter rivals Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday, denying the Whites a first Premier League win in this famous fixture since September 2002.
Leeds arguably went into the contest as the form team despite the distance between them in the table, but Ruben Amorim’s United largely handled the occasion well regardless of their many first-team absences.
The patched-up nature of United’s squad was best summarised by them having as many as six players aged 21 or younger on the bench. And yet, the one substitute Amorim did utilise, Joshua Zirkzee, ended up playing a vital role in Matheus Cunha’s equaliser after Brenden Aaronson‘s opener.
Ultimately, a point was probably a fair outcome that won’t perturb either manager too much, with United moving up to fifth for at least a few hours, while Leeds went eight points clear of the bottom three.
A typically raucous Elland Road atmosphere greeted the players, and although there was plenty of huffing and puffing from both teams in the first half, the opening 45 minutes was rather characterised by a lack of quality in attack.
The visitors will have at least been happy to take some of the intensity out of the occasion.
With Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte screening in front their back three – as Ruben Amorim seemingly switched back to his preferred three centre-backs – Leeds struggled to create much of note.
Daniel Farke’s side recorded a grand total of four attempts prior to the break and none of them were on target – though the in-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin did go close with a header that hit the post.
Otherwise, United were comfortable at the back. The only issue for them was a lack of cohesiveness and quality going forward; while their 10 attempts in the first 45 reflected well on them, only Leny Yoro managed to test Lucas Perri in the Leeds goal with a close-range header.
There wasn’t exactly an immediate improvement on the entertainment after half-time, though Leeds did at least manage to get a shot on target as Gabriel Gudmundsson tested Senne Lammens from a tight angle.
The deadlock was eventually broken just past the hour, however, and unsurprisingly it stemmed from an error.
Diogo Dalot coughed up possession near the halfway line before Pascal Struijk played a first-time ball in behind; Ayden Heaven failed to cut it out and Aaronson pounced, subsequently slotting beyond Lammens.
But Leeds led for just 174 seconds.
With his first touch after coming off the bench, Zirkzee threaded a through ball into the right side of the area for Cunha, who stroked past the stranded Perri.
Zirkzee’s introduction seemed to coincide with another switch in United formation to feature a back four, and that – as well as the Dutchman’s arrival – appeared to aid greater fluency.
He soon set up Benjamin Sesko for a presentable chance that the Slovenian put wide, before he also played an important role in the build up to Cunha hitting the post from the edge of the box.
Leeds went on to enjoy some late pressure but still found testing Lammens a challenge, their inability to force a winner not especially surprising. Nevertheless, the draw extended their seven-match unbeaten run in the league.
