Mater Dei basketball overwhelmed by St. John Bosco’s third-quarter surge

BELLFLOWER – Mater Dei’s opportunity to beat St. John Bosco in a Trinity League boys basketball game Tuesday disappeared quickly in the early minutes of the third quarter.

St. John Bosco scored 20 points in the first four minutes of the quarter to pull away impressively on its way to an 85-64 win at St. John Bosco High.

The Braves (13-4 overall) are 2-0 in the league. They beat Santa Margarita 74-73 in double overtime on Friday.

Mater Dei (14-8 overall) is 1-1 in the Trinity League, having beaten Servite last week.

In the CIF Southern Section rankings that will determine the playoff divisions, St. John Bosco is No. 5 overall while Mater Dei is No. 32.

Christian Collins, a 6-foot-8 guard with plentiful college offers, scored a game-high 23 points with 10 rebounds. He scored the 23 points through three quarters, having been pulled from the game early in the fourth quarter with victory secured.

Mater Dei 6-3 junior guard Richie Ramirez scored a team-high 19 points. Zain Majeed, a 6-8 junior who was at IMG Academy in Florida last season, scored 18 points for the Monarchs. Mater Dei senior guard Luke Barnett, a Kansas signee who is averaging 20 points a game, was limited to six points.

St. John Bosco outscored Mater Dei 26-12 in the third quarter.

The Monarchs were 2 of 14 from the floor in the quarter, including 0 for 9 on 3-point attempts.

Bosco shot 8 of 16 shots in the quarter. Collins, Gavin Dean-Moss and Max Ellis scored seven points each for the Braves.

Collins, who scored 20 points with 11 rebounds against Santa Margarita, got the Braves’ third-quarter run started with an excellent cross-court pass to Dean-Moss for a 3-point basket. Dean-Moss later grabbed a defensive rebound and dribbled the distance for an uncontested layup and a 42-32 lead. Ellis and Collins quickly added 3-pointers and it was 52-36.

At the end of the third quarter it was 60-42.

Mater Dei coach Gary McKnight said the Monarchs’ third-quarter failures were mostly from their lack of rebounding and an inability to get back on defense to thwart the speedy Braves.

“We didn’t block out,” he said. “And we didn’t stop them in transition.”

    McKnight was impressed by Collins.

“He’s extremely talented,” McKnight said. “He can shoot the ball from outside, he can rebound, and he’s good all over the floor. He really improved from last year.”

St. John Bosco coach Matt Dunn was concerned that his team would have a letdown Tuesday after the double-overtime win over Santa Margarita on Friday.

“We have a deep bench,” Dunn said. “I thought if we could play with intensity we would eventually wear (Mater Dei) down. We did an awesome job on Barnett and we shared the ball well.”

Collins made a 3-pointer early in the first quarter to put St. John Bosco ahead 3-2. The Braves never trailed after that in the first half, leading 19-17 at the end of the first quarter and 34-30 at halftime.

The game got chippy and unnecessarily rough in the final 30 seconds. Both teams were assessed technical fouls. The problems started on a hard foul by Mater Dei’s Malloy Smith.

“I think (the Braves) were fired up because they beat us,” McKnight said.

The Trinity League will have a postseason tournament to determine its playoff representatives. It’s unlikely Mater Dei and St. John Bosco will play each other in that tournament, so a Mater Dei-St. John Bosco rematch might not come until the playoffs – if the two teams are placed in the same division.

Mater Dei’s next game is Saturday in the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass. The Monarchs will play Connecticut’s Notre Dame Prep. They resume Trinity League play at Orange Lutheran on Jan. 21.

St. John Bosco plays Florida’s Calvary Christian Academy on Thursday. The Braves resume their Trinity League schedule at JSerra on Jan. 21.
