Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Owen Cullaty has chosen to remain in-state with his commitment to swim and study at Washington and Lee University beginning this fall. The Charlottesville, Va.-based student athlete will relocate about an hour west to the university’s campus in Lexington, Va.
In his commitment announcement, he wrote:
I’m pleased to announce my academic and athletic commitment to Washington and Lee University. I’d like to thank my family and friends for their unwavering support and all the sacrifices they’ve made for me. Thank you to Coach Conor and the rest of my coaches at Cavalier Aquatics for pushing me to be my best and teaching me to trust the process. Finally, thank you to Coach Henderson and Coach Steele for this opportunity. “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever.”

A senior at The Covenant School in Charlottesville, Cullaty has been a member of the Rhinoceros’ swimming and diving team since his freshman year. In addition to competing for his high school team, he currently trains year-round with Cavalier Aquatics, where he primarily specializes in butterfly, with the 200 IM his current third best event.
Cullaty has made huge improvements over the past year, dropping 1.69 seconds in the 100 fly and 2.39 in the 200 fly. He currently holds best times of 48.71 in the 100 fly, 1:47.74 in the 200 fly, and 1:56.68 in the 200 IM.
His fly lifetime bests came two weeks ago at the NC YOTA 32nd Annual YOTA/Arena Capital meet, where he went under the 1:49.09 Winter Junior Nationals qualifying standard in the 200 fly and came within 0.02 seconds of the cut in the 100 fly. However, since the meet was already underway, he wasn’t able to compete at Juniors.
Cullaty’s best time in the 200 IM was set in December 2024, and he came within a second of that last month with a season-best 1:57.31.
A Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) three-time State meet qualifier, Cullaty has a chance to qualify for the fourth straight year next month. Last season, he finished eighth in the 100 fly and 200 IM, his first year making ‘A’ finals after touching 12th in the 200 IM and 17th in the 100 fly in his first two years.

Cullaty will bolster Washington and Lee’s already strong roster, as his best times would have won both fly events and placed him 11th in the 200 IM at last year’s conference meet. His fly legs on the medley relays will be pivotal after the graduation of Matthew Fritz, their top flyer, last May.
Cullaty joins William Thomas, a middle-distance freestyle specialist from Pittsburgh, as the only publicized recruits in the Generals’ class of 2030.
