Like Tatsuya Imai on Thursday, Kazuma Okamoto is signing his big league deal one day before his posting window officially expires.
According to Jeff Passan, he’s headed to Toronto, where the Blue Jays continue their impressive and expensive offseason.
BREAKING: Japanese third baseman Kazuma Okamoto and the Toronto Blue Jays are in agreement on a free agent contract, sources tell ESPN.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) January 3, 2026The terms of the deal for Kazuma Okamoto are not yet clear. I will update this portion of the article once they’re released. Earlier today, we wondered whether or not he’d follow Imai and Munetaka Murakami with a short-term deal, ultimately deciding that it’s unlikely. We’ll know more on that soon, no doubt.
In the meantime … here’s some more.
Kazuma Okamoto to the Blue Jays
The Blue Jays aren’t an entirely unexpected landing spot, but they have been pretty heavily connected to several other significant free agent position players, from outfielder Kyle Tucker to infielders Bo Bichette and Alex Bregman. The question, then, is whether this takes them out on any or all of them?
Financially, you wouldn’t think so (at least, not for the infielders). Toronto has been spending like one of the big boys for a while now, and they’re coming off the deepest possible World Series run, which tends to provide some extra financial wiggle-room in the following year. But positionally, it’s a little more difficult.
Bichette could still play shortstop next to Okamoto, but there has been a lot of talk of Bichette moving to third as soon as this offseason. I suppose I should mention the stray rumors of Okamoto potentially playing the outfield, himself, but I don’t think that’s particularly likely.
To that end, you have to imagine Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette just lost a theoretical suitor, making a deal for either of them with, say, the Red Sox a little more likely.
The Cubs had also been connected to Okamoto throughout the offseason, but never seemed to be leading that charge. Personally, I liked the idea of signing Okamoto, but not more than the two other guys they’ve been connected to, Bregman and Bichette. The Pirates were also very hopeful that they could land him, but I don’t think anyone outside of Pittsburgh actually thought that was happening.
There’s still a lot of offseason to go – and we knew this (and Imai’s) deadline was coming. But the quality free agents are beginning to make up their minds and the Cubs still haven’t made a splash.
