Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh lashed out at the selectors for leaving out Shubman Gill from the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2026. Following his consistent failures in Asia Cup 2025, the series against AUS and SA, the vice-captain was subsequently dropped from the side for the marquee event. Yograj claimed that Gill shouldn’t be dropped just because he failed in four or five innings.

Speaking to journalist Ravish Bisht, Yograj claimed that there were several players in Indian cricket who had been given mutiple opportunities, ha squandered on most occasions and yet were still part of the team. He questioned the reason behind dropping Gill, and wondered if the team would drop Abhishek Sharma as well if he failed in a couple of matches.
“Shubman Gill is a vice-captain. What is the reason behind dropping him? Just because he failed in 4-5 innings? Indian cricketers have had so many players who have barely managed to perform in 10 matches out of 100 opportunities. They still played; you already know the reason why. Young Abhishek Sharma arrived a couple of years ago. If he fails four innings will you drop him as well?,” Yograj said.
While the Punjab batter fared well in ODIs in 2025, amassing 490 runs from 11 matches at an average of 49, his performance in T20Is has been quite poor. Gill returned to action in the IND vs SA T20I series after suffering a neck injury during the 1st Test in Kolkata. following which he was forced to miss the ODI series as well. In the three T20Is that he featured in, he managed to register knocks of 4, 0 and 28. He was ruled out of the 4th T20I due to a foot injury and was replaced by Sanju Samson in the 5th T20I.
Yogaj further took a dig at former Indian captain Kapil Dev and attempted to draw a parallel between him and Gill, and how the former still managed to stay in the team despite poor form.
“Let me give you an example of the ‘great’ Kapil Dev. When we toured Pakistan with Bishan Singh Bedi as captain, Kapil Dev continued to play matches despite failing with bat and ball. But Bishan Singh Bedi still took him on the subsequent tour of England,” Yograj added.
