Redshirt sophomore Austin Mack took over for Simpson, who had previously suffered an elbow injury. Simpson attempted play through the pain, but returned to the medical tent on Alabama’s sideline after its first drive of the second half. He did not return and later left the field in street clothes.
Simpson told AL.com postgame that he cracked a rib on the play where he lost the ball and gave up a costly fumble late in the first half.
Mack had appeared in just three games this season before replacing Simpson, and completed 11 of his 16 pass attempts for 103 yards in relief against the Hoosiers.
“Every game, I tell myself to be ready and really never be surprised,” Mack said postgame. “Anything can happen, and I knew I was one play away from getting in that game.”
Mack had been in competition with true freshman and former 5-star Keelon Russell for the No. 2 position on the team’s depth chart this season. With the NCAA transfer portal opening Friday, there is a possibility the former Washington transfer looks for greener pastures ahead of his redshirt junior season.
Mack was asked if he had a decision to make ahead of Friday’s portal opening.
“As of right now, I’m standing in the Rose Bowl locker room, coming off a game,” Mack said. “I still gotta diagnose that, and honestly, I’m just taking it day by day.”
While Mack’s future in crimson and white may be in doubt, his performance in relief at the Rose Bowl was one of few bright spots for Alabama in its final game of the 2025-26 season.
