The Arizona Wildcats haven’t posted consecutive winning seasons since 2012-15 and coach Brent Brennan in the leadup to Friday’s Holiday Bowl against SMU emphasized the program being set up to stack good play year after year.
Brennan said Monday taking advantage of the extra month-plus of practice following their Territorial Cup win at ASU is how consistently good football teams get that way.
“It’s a huge component of why great programs are consistently good,” Brennan said. “They get that extra block of spring practice for the bowl game.
“We talked to all kinds of head coaches and their staffs about the best plan for that, and I think we did a good job of walking the fine line between it being too much practice and beating the hell out of each other for a month straight but also getting some really intentional physical work done.”

After a disappointing 4-8 drop-off from a 10-3 season under Jedd Fisch — in which Arizona capped it off with an Alamo Bowl title — the Wildcats rebounded to go 9-3 in the regular season and can reach 10 wins for just the second time this century with a victory in Holiday Bowl.
Their resume includes five straight wins, which feature two against teams in the College Football Playoff at the time the game was played — 30-24 at No. 25 Cincinnati on Nov. 15 and 23-7 at No. 20 ASU on Nov. 28.
The former head coach at San Jose State, who led the Spartans to three bowls in his seven seasons there, said he has never experienced such a lengthy layoff between games. He estimated that Arizona held 13 bonus practices in Tucson before the group headed to San Diego.
Brennan, who recalled fond memories of playing (even it was only one snap) in the 1994 Rose Bowl for UCLA, said he wants his players to enjoy “the bowl experience” because it really is made for the memory bank down the road.
“You might not remember a road trip to wherever in the middle of October, but you remember the bowl experience,” Brennan said. “I want our players to enjoy it, I want them to have a great time.
“Then when it’s time for football, I want them locked in. I want us to get after it in the practice environment and be ready to play Friday night. In this moment, I want it all.”
Speaking of “all,” the winning coach of the newly re-sponsored Trust & Will Holiday Bowl will get a champion’s sweater — and it’s not easy on the eyes.

The Wildcats coach had promised reporters to be transparent about any bowl game opt-outs after Christmas, and he said “it’s been good” on that front.
Only seven players, according to 247 Sports, have made it their intent to enter the transfer portal, which officially opens on Friday.
“All those decisions are really personal and family decisions and I want to be respectful of that, I want to be respectful of those kids’ process,” Brennan said. “Our guys have done a nice job with it and I’m sure Coach (Rhett) Lashlee of SMU would love to know where we’re at with (opt-outs and the portal), but they can find out Friday night.”
Both defensive coordinator Danny Gonzalez, who was named a semifinalist for the nation’s top assistant, and offensive coordinator Seth Doege are expected back for the 2026 season. Quarterback Noah Fifita is also expected to spend his final year of eligibility as a redshirt senior with the Wildcats.
