Braylon Staley was one of Tennessee‘s top recruits when he signed with Josh Heupel and the Volunteers out of the class of 2024.
On Tuesday, the redshirt freshman from South Carolina put his name in the Vols’ record book.
Staley made three catches for 23 yards in the first half for the Vols against Illinois in the Music City Bowl at Nissan Stadium in Nashville. That gave him 67 for the season, setting a record for most receptions by a Tennessee freshman. It also put him in striking distance of the top 10 highest single-season receiving totals in program history.
Staley has emerged as one of the top receiving threats in the SEC, partnering with Chris Brazzell to provide reliable targets for Joey Aguilar. He started the day with 806 yards, sixth in the conference and second on the team. He has also recorded six touchdowns.
His strong 2025 season has earned him accolades from the league office. Staley was named the 2025 SEC Freshman of the Year, joining Jamal Lewis and Peyton Manning as the only Vols to win the award.
Staley’s highest receiving total came on Oct. 11 when he pulled in six catches for 109 yards against Arkansas. He followed that up a week later with a career-high 10 catches against Alabama.
