Staying or going? Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort

The Arizona Cardinals failed to come anywhere close to expectations in their third season under the current regime.

A case-by-case look into who’s on hot seat and what the end result might be once the offseason takes hold, beginning at the top of the mountain:

The three-year plan looked great on paper for Ossenfort and the rest of the new faces tasked with Arizona’s turnaround.

Set a new foundation behind culture-building and roster improvement through the first two seasons before really getting after it with a playoff run in Year 3.

Through two seasons, the plan appeared to be on track — even looking ahead of schedule at points.

Doubling 2023’s win total last year from four to eight, while also lightly flirting for the divisional lead midseason at the very least provided some hope things were trending upward.

Noticeable growth was on display with cornerback Garrett Williams and offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr., wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. bulked up for a big Year 2 and Darius Robinson was entering an injury-free season after being down for most of his rookie season.

And that’s before mentioning the defensive upgrades headlined by Josh Sweat and Calais Campbell in free agency and rookies Walter Nolen III and Will Johnson via the NFL Draft.

But instead of gearing up for a postseason tilt or even being in the hunt with a game to play, the Cardinals were one of the first teams eliminated from playoff contention and are circling the drain on a potential three-win season.

Despite defensive reinforcements, the Cardinals are getting beat early and often by opposing offenses. After being a unit that appeared to be doing a lot with a little early into the regime’s tenure, it’s now a liability that could give up a 40-burger at any given moment.

As for the free agent additions from 2024? Justin Jones was waived after just three games played across two seasons, Bilal Nichols has struggled to stay on the field and Sean Murphy-Bunting got hurt before the year even began. Mack Wilson Sr. and his emergence at inside linebacker makes for the only big-time success story from the class.

Robinson, meanwhile, has shown more of late but has yet to live up to his first-round price tag.

Nolen wowed when healthy but only appeared in six games and recently suffered a noncontact knee injury that ended his rookie season.

Williams went down with his own noncontact injury — torn Achilles — the same game.

The offense, which was built more off of continuity than actual enhancements, sputtered more times than not with quarterback Kyler Murray running the show.

Jacoby Brissett has since given the unit a little more life in place of Murray, tight end Trey McBride is setting NFL and franchise records on a weekly basis and wide receiver Michael Wilson is proving he needs more of a workload.

And yet the offense has still failed to put up more than 27 points in a game this season. The Brissett-led offense has helped produced one win to Murray’s two.

Injuries have wrecked that side of the ball, too, with running backs James Conner and Trey Benson suffering season-ending injuries. The offensive line in particular has dealt with its fair share, same with Harrison. Both, however, haven’t produced the way they should regardless of injuries.

A case can certainly be made for and against Ossenfort remaining as Cardinals GM.

He’s missed on plenty of draft picks and free agents — as GMs do from time to time — but did land Sweat and Mack Wilson Sr.

The early returns on Nolen and Will Johnson (if they can stay healthy) have also been promising. Johnson is shaping up as Arizona’s cornerstone along the offensive line. Williams and Cody Simon figure to be key parts in the future plans.

Ossenfort, however, likely won’t be one of the heads rolling for the team’s failures this offseason. The coaching staff will see it’s changes before Ossenfort is truly in the crosshairs.

He very likely will get a chance to right the ship he’s captained since 2023 and may even get to handpick the franchise’s next quarterback.

After that, though, all bets are off.

If the wins aren’t there, it’s teardown time in Arizona’s front office (and more).
