The kids have another week left of their break for the holidays, and I am definitely not counting those days down like it’s a posting window for a Japanese star …
I appreciated reading an actual human translation of Tatsuya Imai’s comments about the posting process, which we discussed yesterday, and which concludes this Friday, January 2 at the latest. The automated translations weren’t TOO far off (close enough to get the right sense of where things stand), but this is better:??⚾️ Translated comments from Tatsuya Imai on TV Asahi’s program yesterday:[Paraphrasing]“I’m not really paying attention to the media reports. — Yakyu Cosmopolitan (@yakyucosmo) December 30, 2025 Consider that Shota Imanaga is getting $22 million this coming season on a Qualifying Offer – just absolutely obliterating what he could be making if he’d never decided to come over. Speaking of Imanaga, I love him, and I’m glad he is around for another season. I really enjoy watching him and rooting for him:Here is a short summary of today’s Shōta's podcast. — CubbyMike?? (@CubbyMike76) December 30, 2025 Lastly on the two Japanese pitchers, who don’t actually have a whole lot in common in terms of pitching, but who did both pitch in the same league before coming over, I was curious how Imanaga’s performance in the NPB compared to Imai’s immediately before they were posted. Imanaga, who was a couple years older at the time, had a longer track record of top-tier performance, but Imai’s results (ERA-) were consistently about 25% better than league average for the four years before he left (Imanaga was closer to 20%). Imanaga’s peripherals were better for longer, too, but his FIP- in the two years before he left were 15% and 27% better then league average. For Imai, those numbers were 19% and 34%. Imanaga was the better K/BB guy in that walk year, but Imai was basically impossible to generate hard contact off of. In sum, Imanaga was arguably the better pitcher for longer, but Imai had a much more extreme walk year, and could be “peaking” a little more than Imanaga was. Each had questions about how the fastball would translate (velocity for Imanaga, shape for Imai), and whether the secondaries would get as many strikeouts in MLB. Obviously Imanaga translated rather well overall (though the home run concerns definitely showed up), but Imai is probably going to cost quite a bit more overall. Yesterday, I asked whether the Reds were finished in their outfield (or even positionally overall) after adding two more outfielders to a group that goes 10 deep. The reported answer: the Reds are “open” to adding another outfielder, likely via trade (what, no Kyle Tucker?). Which I take to mean that, yes, the Reds MIGHT not add another bat this offseason, unless they can find just the right pitcher-for-hitter trade out there. I hope that doesn’t happen, as it would make me happy to see the Reds squandering their current window of opportunity to compete atop the NL Central. Speaking of fringy NL contenders adding complementary types to their outfield mix:The Miami Marlins today acquired OF Esteury Ruiz from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Minor League RHP Adriano Marrero. To make room on the 40-man roster for Ruiz, the Marlins have designated INF Eric Wagaman for assignment. pic.twitter.com/DVK0m11iLi
— Miami Marlins (@Marlins) December 30, 2025 I always get mad when I see Esteury Ruiz’s name, not because of anything he did, but because it reminds me of the INSANE AND TERRIBLE AND WHY DID YOU DO THIS Sean Murphy trade a few years back, from which the A’s got a whole lot of nothing, and into which the Brewers inserted themselves and landed William Contreras for a song. So the Marlins effectively replace Dane Myers (traded to the Reds) with Ruiz, who rates as mediocre defensively, but who has elite speed. He can’t really hit, though, so he’s a bit like Billy Hamilton lite, but without the defense. Just 26 and has always raked at Triple-A, though, so maybe something improves.
