Crystal Palace were made to pay by a set-piece again as the Eagles lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

Archie Gray’s first senior goal was enough to secure a much-needed three points for Spurs, and coming from a corner, it made it six consecutive goals conceded by Oliver Glasner’s men from set-pieces.

Jean-Philippe Mateta, Justin Devenny, Maxence Lacroix and Marc Guéhi all missed opportunities on a frustrating day for Palace, while Gray took his just before the break, heading in from close range to the delight of under-pressure boss Thomas Frank.

The result leaves Palace in ninth place in the Premier League, while Spurs climb to 11th after their first away win in the league since beating Everton 3-0 in October.

Tottenham were missing suspended duo Xavi Simons and Cristian Romero after both were sent off in the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, and there were hearts in mouths early on when Romero’s replacement, Kevin Danso, tripped Devenny after the youngster broke on goal. Referee Jarred Gillett showed a yellow card to the centre-back, though, as Djed Spence appeared to be on the cover.

Danso’s booking (4:37) was the earliest by a Tottenham player in a London derby in the Premier League since Michael Dawson vs Charlton in December 2006 (3:51).

Palace started on the front foot, but it was Spurs who had the ball in the net early on. A Pedro Porro ball into the box was put away by Richarlison in the 17th minute, but the visitors’ celebrations were cut short after a VAR check found Lucas Bergvall to be offside in the build-up.

The hosts had a great chance to take the lead 10 minutes later, with Lacroix heading Adam Wharton’s cross to the other side of the penalty area for Mateta, but the French striker put his effort over the bar.

Palace’s set-piece problems continued to haunt them, though as Spurs took the lead in the 42nd minute. A Porro corner wasn’t dealt with, and Richarlison flicked the ball to Gray to nod in his first goal in senior football from close range.

Gray, at 19 years and 291 days old, became the youngest Englishman to score for Tottenham in the Premier League since Dele Alli in January 2016 (19y 287d – also vs Crystal Palace).

It was Tottenham’s first shot on target, but was an important moment as they came into this game having won six of the seven Premier League games this season in which they scored the first goal.

Palace came very close to equalising in the 55th minute, though. A neat one-two between Yéremy Pino and Tyrick Mitchell led to the Spaniard putting a cross in with the outside of his boot, which was headed back to Devenny by Nathaniel Clyne, but the Northern Ireland international hit his shot over the bar from close range on the turn.

Having been troubled by set-pieces recently, Palace almost levelled from one in the 70th minute but Lacroix steered his header wide when, like Mateta and Devenny before him, he really should have done better.

Spurs appeared to put the game to bed on the counter in the 75th minute. Mohammed Kudus’ cross from the right found Richarlison at the far post for a simple tap in, but the latter had gone slightly too early and was found to be offside by the VAR.

It was then Guéhi’s turn to head a good chance over from a corner, glancing his unmarked effort from Wharton’s ball too high from inside the six-yard box.

Spurs looked to shut up shop as centre-back Radu Dragusin came on in the closing minutes for his first appearance since suffering an ACL injury in January, but they almost snatched a second goal when Wilson Odobert ran through, though his shot hit the base of the left-hand post and came out.

Rodrigo Bentancur was also denied late on, with Dean Henderson making a smart save, but it mattered not as Spurs hung on for a valuable three points. Palace end an outstanding 2025 with a bit of a whimper, without a win in five games in all competitions, and having lost their last three in the Premier League.
