Fehmarnbelt project will expand Denmark by 300,000 sq m
Denmark will get 300,000 sq m of new territory thanks to a reclamation project using seabed material excavated for the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel linking Denmark to Germany.

The 18km-long tunnel will be the longest combined road and rail tunnel in the world when complete.

Located east of the tunnel factory in the Danish harbour town of Rødbyhavn, the reclaimed area will offer the public views of the sea. It will have three ponds to support flora and fauna. Soil with plant seeds moved from the tunnel factory site has been spread over the new territory.

Ditte Hjort, project manager for nature initiatives at the state-run Sund & Bælt, said: “We have reused material from the seabed to create an area where people can experience distinctive coastal nature, with walking trails, ponds and wildlife including birds, amphibians and insects.

“What makes the new area so special is that visitors can follow nature’s development right from the outset. We hope it will become a unique experience for visitors, with salt marshes and rich, diverse wildlife and plant life.”

When completed, the Fehmarnbelt tunnel will reduce journey times between Hamburg and Copenhagen to two hours by train and approximately 70 minutes by road.

It is due to open in two phases, first the road tunnels, then the rail ones.
