Authorities are searching for a seafood bandit who allegedly impersonated a shipment driver and made away with $400,000 worth of lobster.
Dylan Rexing, the president and chief executive of supply chain company Rexing Companies, said the lobsters, which had already died and been processed, were headed to Costco stores in Illinois and Minnesota.
“This theft wasn’t random,” Rexing said. “It followed a pattern we’re seeing more and more, where criminals impersonate legitimate carriers using spoofed emails and burner phones to hijack high-value freight while it’s in transit.”
The company official said the shipment wasn’t hijacked at truck stop, rather a driver with a fake commercial driver’s license was impersonated the actual driver.
For a mid-size brokerage, the official explained, a $400,000 loss is “significant” and “forces tough decisions and ultimately drives up costs across the supply chain – costs consumers ultimately end up paying.”
Following the theft, Rexing called on federal agencies to utilize modern enforcement tools to keep up with organized criminal networks.
“Until that happens, these thefts will continue to disrupt businesses and impact everyday prices,” he stated.
