In the latest episode of our Arcade Hang interview series, the brilliant Samantha Béart met up with me at Four Quarters London Bridge to play some arcade machines and chat about their various projects.
You can watch the resultant video above, or over on our YouTube channel, or you can keep on reading for some choice quotes from the conversation!
The video really does add something, though, namely me and Samantha losing our minds while playing Lucky and Wild.
Of course, we had to talk about Karlach in Baldur's Gate 3, the iconic companion role that etched Béart's performance into the hearts of millions. But what do they remember about nabbing the role?
Turns out, quite a lot. In Béart's words: "My early auditions were, they gave me a small biography of Karlach, so I always knew what was gonna happen to her, and her overall arc, and who she is as a person. And she's a real sort of vigilante justice junkie, right? Essentially. So, you get the sense of the character."
"It's quite a simple character in some ways," Béart continues. "It's more about what happens to her, how she reacts is more complex, which we have an entire game to explore, hundreds of hours to explore. That's all good. [...] And [the audition scene] was, we meet her for the first time and she's feeling pretty hostile, and we played around with that.
"And in the game, she's a lot more friendly than she was back then. And they obviously saw some sort of potential, 'cause I got the call within, I wanna say a day, but definitely within two days. Either that or they were desperate. They could have been desperate."
Since reaching a huge audience with Baldur's Gate 3, Béart has been keen to use their platform to shine a light on the lesser known corners of game development.
The second season of Béart's behind the scenes interview series, It Takes A Village, is available now on their YouTube channel.
"I love seeing the people who make games," Béart told us. "I wanna see their faces, I wanna know what they do. Tell me about a day at work. You know, if you can, show me. Because we grew up, you know, watching behind-the-scenes on films. Everything that [Steven] Spielberg was involved in the '80s, there will always be some sort of behind the scenes, and they show you how it got made into a ride at Disneyland or whatever.
"And, like, it taught people about props. I know someone who ended up in prop-making because, you know, they were behind the scenes on the Alien films, and they saw that, and they wanted to get into it. And I think that's really important in games because there are just so many roles that people don't know about.
"And people within games don't know about the roles that their neighbour does, you know? So I think we should talk to each other a bit more."
As for what's coming up for Béart, they are playing the lead in a "cool indie game" with a "desert punk" vibe, called Fading Echo, that "has this sort of Jamie Hewlett look to it." Check out the trailer below and you'll see what they mean.

"You can also turn into a small blob of water, And it's the cutest thing ever. And you react to the elements in the game. So you touch lava, you turn into steam. You touch a poison substance they call waste, you can jump really high. So, as you are bouncing and landing on different substances, you change. It's really fun."
Describing their character in Fading Echo, named One, Béart says, "She is a baby. She doesn't know anything. She only knows her mother. I'd say she's incredibly mature and loving and forgiving, considering what's coming her way.
"That's a spoiler thing. Not an NDA thing. I don't wanna ruin it for everyone. But she's going to meet more and more people in her mother's life and her family, as the game goes on, and start speaking truth to power."
"And we will learn more about Echo if this is a hit," Béart adds, before turning to the camera and speaking directly to the audience at home. "Please play it. We wanna do more. I'm appealing to you!"
You heard them! You can learn more about Fading Echo, which will launch in 2026, on the game's official website.
