A dense fog advisory is in effect for multiple suburbs across the Chicago area, with visibility below half-a-mile for some as the busy Christmas travel rush continues.
According to the National Weather Service, the dense fog advisory would remain in effect until 9 a.m. for DeKalb, Kane, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Will and Kankakee Counties in Illinois and Newton County in Indiana.
“Visibility could drop to a quarter mile or less at times, especially north of I-80,” the NWS said in a post on X Friday morning. “If on the road this morning, slow down and be alert for sudden visibility changes.”

— NWS Chicago (@NWSChicago) December 26, 2025Early Friday morning, tollway cameras from I-294 at Balmoral in Rosemont showed rain and fog heavily clouding the rush hour commute.
More fog was expected to develop overnight Friday and into Saturday morning, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.
The grey weather comes as mild temperatures across the Chicago area continue, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Iisha Scott said, with a high temperature of 50 degrees expected Friday.
High temperatures over the weekend would remain in the 40s and 50s, Scott said, with some areas reaching into the mid-50s and near 60s Sunday. Spotty showers were possible Saturday, with storms possible in counties to the south on Sunday, Scott added.
Don’t get used to the mild weather, Scott said. By Monday, temperatures were expected to plummet at least 20 degrees, with a high of only 24 and snow possible.
More snow was possible for New Years Eve on Wednesday, Scott said, with temperatures in the 20s and 30s all next week.
“It’s going to get much colder as you celebrate the new year,” Scott said.
