The trauma service team, which is always on standby for serious cases, was notified immediately. The shooting coincided with a shift change, adding to the complexity of the situation.
News10NBC Deanna Dewberry: So I am sure of course they radio in and let you know what’s coming. what’s the kind of preparation that is goes on there in the ER, when you know you’ve got four people shot.”
Dr. Kamali: “At any given moment we try and have several beds that are continually available. Those are our most critical beds and what we call our critical bay or our trauma bay. So people that were here stayed here. People that came in got to work,”
News10NBC Deanna Dewberry: Now you’ve been here since ’97. Have you ever had a situation like this with multiple officers shot?
Dr. Kamali: “No, and I don’t want to relive it. We care greatly about our community. We don’t want anyone shot. We especially don’t want police officers shot,”
News10NBC Deanna Dewberry: “As the doctor who has the lives of these officers in your hands and you’ve got 50 or more officers standing in the lobby waiting for word, does that put a bit more pressure on what already is a pressure cooker of a job?
Dr. Kamali: “Having three of our officers shot coming in of course raises what would normally be a very stressful event to even more stressful. But what everyone did is what they do, which is our jobs, what we do day in and day out,”
The medical team’s efforts underscored their commitment to the community and their ability to respond effectively in high-pressure situations.
