In the 1980s, a legendary hair metal band soared to the top of the charts with a song fueled by its frontman’s real-life heartbreak.
Bret Michaels, who fronted Poison, likely wasn't thinking a song written about being dumped by a girlfriend would ever hit the top of the Billboard charts. However, that's just what happened on December 24, 1988.
The power ballad, titled "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," became one of the most popular songs of the latter part of the 1980s. Its raw emotion struck a nerve with fans, helping the song dominate radio airwaves.
In a story posted by Louder Sound, the complete backstory was revealed about the inspiration behind "Every Rose Has Its Thorn." Michaels and bandmates CC DeVille, Bobby Dall, and Rikki Rockett had just played a gig when he decided to make a late-night call to his current girlfriend while he was washing his clothes.

At the time, Michaels and the woman were living together in an apartment in Hollywood. The site quoted Michaels who said, “She answered the phone, but she sounded a little odd."
“Immediately, she gave me that ‘I’m really sleepy’ line, which was not something she would normally say. And then I heard it, the whispering in the background."
He concluded, "It was obviously a guy’s voice. Now, a female voice that I could’ve lived with, you know what I’m saying? Hell, I may have even welcomed it! But another guy… It broke my heart.”
In an interview with The Dallas Observer, Michaels admitted, "I wrote 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn' in a laundromat in Dallas waiting for my clothes to dry. I actually convinced Poison to play a country bar back then. It was around 1987 and the country bar was called The Ritz."

However, the song took on a life of its own as it rose up the Billboard charts. "I went into the studio and recorded it just like I felt. You never know. When you write a song, nothing pops up and says that this song is magic. When I wrote it, it came from my heart and soul. We put it on the record [Open Up and Say...Ahh]."
"We didn’t even try to go out with it until the third one from the album. The record company really didn’t believe in it. It ended up being No. 1. It was a rock and country station in Dallas that actually broke it," Michaels concluded.
“Every Rose Has Its Thorn” continues to endure as a timeless rock song, still resonating with listeners decades after its release. Its raw honesty and emotional vulnerability have helped cement the song as one of the most enduring power ballads of the 1980s.
