Peter Criss opened up about his final conversation with his late friend and bandmate Ace Frehley.
Two months after the legendary KISS guitarist died at age 74, Criss and the rest of the band's founding members received a lifetime achievement honor at The Kennedy Center Honors ceremony in Washington, D.C. In an interview posted by Cleveland.com, Criss revealed that the last time he spoke to Frehley was a few weeks before his death and that his longtime friend had been excited for the Kennedy Center ceremony.
“[I spoke to him] a few weeks back. He was so excited,” Criss said, recalling that Frehley told him, “’Well, Cat, I can’t believe we’re getting this award.'”
“He was really excited about it,” the original KISS drummer added. “I haven’t heard him that excited for a while. He was getting ready to tour again, working on his next album. Ace actually put out more solo albums than any of us. I love him for that. He was a true musician, to the core, even more than I am.”
Criss called the band’s Kennedy Center honor “bittersweet" without Frehley there. “That’s a sad thing, bittersweet,” he said. “I really miss my brother Ace. We were extremely close. I’m still mourning him. I still can’t believe he’s gone. It’s been very hard. Jeanette (Frehley’s wife) was there, and Monique, his daughter; the president put the medal on her. Up in the (Kennedy Center) booth I got to sit next to Ace’s empty chair, where his medal was.”
In a red carpet interview that took place on the night of the Kennedy Center Honors, Criss revealed that he lived near Frehley and was close to his family.
“So, it's been a hell of a loss, but I was with him at the end,” Criss shared. “I got to see …it was very, very depressing. So, I miss him. I wish he was here. He was very excited. He wanted to be here. …I can't say enough about Ace. I miss him dearly. A very heavy subject right now. I don't want to break down and start crying about him.”
Frehley died on October 16, 2025, after suffering a fall at his New Jersey home. The beloved guitarist had been in a coma and on a ventilator before his family made the decision to take him off life support, according to TMZ.
Following Frehley’s death, Criss posted to his official website to pay tribute to his bandmate, whom he considered a “brother.”
"With a broken heart and deep, deep sadness, my brother Ace Frehley has passed away,” Criss wrote in October. “He died peacefully with his family around him. My wife and I were with him to the end as well. I love you, my brother.”
