Corshawnda Hatter and her two kids 6-year-old DeVonye and 10-year-old Devon Lee Jr are finding a bright spot in the holiday season following a dark time of their own.
In November, Hatter and her son were attacked by a group of kids near Chicago’s Orville Bright Elementary School in the South Deering neighborhood. Police said both were taken to the hospital in serious condition.
The attack was caught on camera and spread throughout social media. Rap artist Lil Zay Osama, a Chicago native, saw the video and knew he wanted to do something to uplift the family.
“I want to do something for them letting them know I support them and I’m behind them,” he told NBC 5 News. “It means a lot. Coming from where I come from I ain’t grow up with stuff like that, with role models giving back in our neighborhoods.”
Lil Zay connected with Roseland Ceasefire in Chicago, an organization designed to stop violence before it happens. In this case they were able to work together to donate curated gifts to the kids for Christmas.
“We let them know the community is with them and were supporting them throughout this journey,” said Roseland Ceasefire’s Bob Jackson.
Dolls, clothes and video games helped provide a bright spot in the holiday season. Hatter said she’s grateful for the community’s support for her family following the attack.
“That made me tear up a little bit knowing that there’s more people out here that care for us,” she said.
Law enforcement officials say seven kids ranging from 10 to 13 years old face misdemeanor battery charges for the attack.
