Beaches near the Tijuana Slough and a storm drain in South Mission Beach were ordered closed Tuesday by the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality because of high bacteria levels.
Water contact closures were lifted for beaches near Carnation and Cortez avenues in Imperial Beach, and in Crown Cove in Coronado, as recent water quality samples were found to meet state health standards.
Advisories were issued by the department for San Elijo Lagoon Outlet in Cardiff and the ocean shoreline from the U.S.-Mexico border to the end of Seacoast Drive and the Imperial Beach Pier.
A health advisory remains in effect for Children’s Pool in La Jolla, which is the site of a seasonal harbor seal rookery.
The public is advised to avoid water contact in areas under advisories as the water is impacted by sewage and may cause illness. Those areas will remain closed until sampling confirms they are safe again for water contact.
The Tijuana Slough is a 1,072-acre wetland established in 1980, and is part of the 2,800-acre Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve.
The South Mission Beach storm drain is located 250 feet north of 2540 E. Mission Bay Drive and is part of the larger Mission Beach community along the coast.
