Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer will battle with his former employer — the Indiana Hoosiers — when the Crimson Tide takes the field in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.
DeBoer’s tenure in Bloomington was short, as he accepted the head coaching job at Fresno State after the 2019 season. His offense averaged 31.8 points per game, 432.8 yards per game and 6.0 yards per play en route to an 8-5 record and a Gator Bowl berth, where it lost 23-22 to Tennessee.
DeBoer called Bloomington a “great place to live” for him and his family, and added that Indiana welcomed him “with open arms.”
He helped develop then-Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. during his first season as the Hoosiers’ starter. Penix suffered a sternoclavicular joint injury in November 2019, ending a redshirt freshman year that showed immense promise under DeBoer’s leadership.
The two later reunited at Washington in 2022 and achieved great success in the two seasons they donned purple and gold, going 25-3 and reaching the CFP national championship game in 2023-24.
Also at Indiana in 2019 was Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kane Wommack. Wommack was hired by the Hoosiers in 2018 as the team’s linebackers coach and was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2019 after Mark Hagen departed for Texas.
“He would be willing to work with you to help make sure it was best for our team and not just his side of the ball,” DeBoer said of Wommack.
DeBoer recalled a favorite memory of his short stint in Bloomington, a 38-31 victory over Nebraska in Lincoln — a mere three and a half hours from his hometown of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
“I thought that was a big one for us, as we kind of moved forward,” DeBoer said of the victory.
The second-year Crimson Tide coach will face off with former Alabama wide receivers coach and current Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti. Like Cignetti, DeBoer’s coaching career began at the lower levels of college football, and did not reach the heights it has until former Hoosiers head coach Tom Allen took a chance on him.
“I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” DeBoer said of his coaching journey. “I think there’s things that you do that give you an appreciation for the moment you’re in.”
Alabama will meet Indiana in the 112th edition of the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. CT, and the game can be streamed on ESPN.
