Christmas may feel far more like early spring than winter for most Americans this year, according to FOX Weather meteorologist Ian Oliver, who says record-breaking warmth is possible across much of the country just as dangerous storms threaten parts of both coasts.
“For almost everybody (250+ million Americans), it’ll feel more like St. Patty’s Day than Christmas come Thursday,” Oliver tells Parade. “Temperatures will be exceedingly spring-like, with a potentially warmest Christmas on record ahead for cities like Dallas up through St. Louis.”

The unusually mild pattern means generally pleasant conditions for much of the central and eastern U.S., but Oliver warned that the calm won’t be universal.
“So we’re expecting mostly nice conditions, but there will be some naughty weather on both coasts,” he said. “Expect some travel headaches as a result.”

The most serious concerns are unfolding in the West, where an active storm pattern has already caused significant problems. Oliver noted that a powerful system has dumped extreme rainfall across California in recent days. “A dangerously active pattern out West has already put down over a foot of rain since Saturday and generated widespread flooding in Northern California,” he said.

More hazardous weather is on the way as Christmas approaches. “A lot more rain is on the way, with life-threatening flooding down into Southern California come Christmas Eve into Christmas Day,” Oliver warned.
In the mountains, the situation could become even more treacherous. “Some of the high peaks of the Sierra Nevada could exceed 100 inches of snow through Friday,” he said, calling the totals especially notable after a slow start to the snow season. “That’s a big deal in what has been a brutal start to the snow season—parts of the Sierra Nevada are at less than 10% of their average snow to date.”
Travel through mountain passes could become extremely difficult. “The timing, of course, could be better, with travel through the passes expected to be dangerous or even impossible at times,” Oliver said.

While the West deals with flooding and heavy snow, Oliver also urged travelers to keep an eye on conditions after Christmas in the Northeast. “Heads up for some tricky travel and bad weather in the Northeast in the days beyond Christmas,” he said, adding, "A couple of fast-moving clipper systems are expected Friday and late in the weekend, with a mix of rain, snow, and ice across the region."
The takeaway, Oliver said, is to enjoy the warmth if you can—but stay alert. With record-breaking temperatures for many cities and dangerous weather looming for others, flexibility and frequent forecast checks will be key as Christmas travel ramps up.
