A man who barricaded himself inside a Spring Valley apartment building early Monday surrendered to authorities after a five-hour standoff.
It began just after 6 a.m. when Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a suspect violating a court order at a residence in the 1600 block of Canyon Road.
“A man showed up to an apartment where he was restricted by a restraining order,” Sheriff’s Lt. Nick Backouris said. “The family called the sheriff’s office, alleging he was armed with a firearm. Sheriff’s patrol responded and attempted to get him to exit. He did not.”
Backouris said a check by sheriff’s deputies revealed the suspect had a warrant out for his arrest. Based on the warrant, and the family’s allegations, the sheriff’s SWAT team responded. The suspect didn’t comply with instructions, leading to the stalemate.
It lasted until about 11 a.m., when the suspect “exited and surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody,” Backouris said.
Other apartments in the building were evacuated during the stand off, along with several homes in the vicinity. Authorities did not release the suspect’s name.
