Of Course Caleb Williams Had Faith in Jahdae Walker in Crunch Time

Jahdae Walker’s first NFL regular-season touchdown was an all-timer.

Uncovered in the end zone because of a busted coverage, Walker’s fourth-down reception provided the equalizing score in a wild Bears-Packers game that helped bring new life to an old rivalry. I just can’t get enough of this moment:

If you were wondering if the Jahdae Walker catch was a stroke of luck or the result of being in the right place at the right time, allow Bears quarterback Caleb Williams to explain how the magic happened.

“Throughout the week, having belief and trust in him. Throughout the week, communicating with him exactly what I want, exactly where he needs to be. Him having faith, having belief what I’m saying, what the coaches are saying. He goes out there and makes plays and he’s in the right spot. The ball will find him. That’s what happened on that play.

I didn’t second guess. I knew he was out there. It was Jahdae’s out there. I’m going to throw this ball exactly where I told him I was going to throw it in practice and he’s going to be exactly where he needs to be just like he did.

More on Jahdae Walker here from Caleb Williams, who shares anecdotes about how he and Walker’s bond has been building since the offseason:

Ben Johnson had faith in Jahdae Walker, too

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams wasn’t the only one who had faith in the rookie receiver.

I love this quote from first-year Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson (h/t Pro Football Talk) who just knew that Jahdae Walker had it in him to make a big play:

“To the people that haven’t been in the building it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh you’re going to the undrafted rookie on fourth down?’ We see what he does every week. We see how he goes about his business. There’s a reason we didn’t expose him to the waiver wire and someone poach him after the preseason. We see a bright future for this guy and he’s done nothing but steadily improve over the course of the season. The coaches trust him. Caleb trusts him.”

What the Bears coach had to say about Jahdae Walker lines up with what the quarterback said above. There is a trust that was built long before that fourth-quarter catch happened. Getting to that moment on Saturday night began when Chicago’s front office plucked him as an undrafted free agent. From there, Walker worked his way through minicamps, training camp, and the preseason to earn a roster spot on the Week 1 squad. As Johnson points out, there is a reason the Bears didn’t expose him to the waiver wire in an attempt to try and stash him on the practice squad. The powers that be saw a valuable piece of the puzzle. And that faith paid off.

And kudos to Matt Rooney, who had Walker pegged as a good fit for this Bears team when he arrived as a UDFA:

Walker is a perfect match for players who Bears GM Ryan Poles likes to take a shot on late in the draft. His Relative Athletic Score made him one of the most athletic wide receiver prospects in the draft. He ran a 4.45 40-yard dash. At Texas A&M last season, he recorded 345 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns and factored in on special teams as well.

The addition of Luther Burden III certainly makes the Bears’ receiver room a little more crowded. But Walker’s athleticism, 6-foot-4 frame, and ability to contribute on special teams make him an intriguing player to watch this offseason when mini camp and camp roll around.

When teams like the Bears come out of nowhere to be good, it takes a full effort from everyone on the roster. It seems cliché, but there is always a sprinkle of truth in those. Unexpected heroes come out of nowhere. I hope that this is just the first chapter of Walker’s developmental arc with this team. Based on how hard he has worked to make it to this point, I can see him playing his way into bigger and better things down the line.
