Top 5 Storylines to Watch for the Summer League Bulls

Our Chicago Bulls will be making their 2026 Las Vegas Summer League debut TONIGHT against the Memphis Grizzlies!

Finally, Chicago will get a first look at rookie top-15 picks Caleb Wilson (No. 4) and Dailyn Swain (No. 15). As an added bonus, Bulls fans will have the opportunity to check out one of the other most highly-touted rookies this season, former All-American Duke phenom Cameron Boozer, plus first-year forward Karim Lopez, on the Memphis Grizzlies.

Chicago is also set to face off against the Nos. 1 and 2 picks, Washington Wizards small forward and Utah Jazz combo guard Darryn Peterson, plus No. 24 selection Cameron Carr’s Los Angeles Lakers.

Ahead of the first game, let’s take stock of the five big storylines Bulls fans should keep tabs on at T-Mobile Arena over this next week-plus.

Wilson is the Bulls’ highest draft pick since, uh, former No. 4 selection Patrick Williams.

But he heads into the league with way, way more buzz from the NBA pundit class. In this stacked draft, Wilson, Dybantsa, Peterson, and Boozer stand apart. Most agree that the top four picks all have a legitimate shot at becoming top-15 players in the league (i.e. at least All-NBA Third Teamers).

Still missing a 3-point shot, Wilson might have the most work to do among the four. But he’s already a great two-way player around the rack. How will he perform against the others this year? We’re about to get a sneak peek.

New Bulls head coach Tiago Splitter hinted that Swain, who essentially served as a small forward with the Longhorns, will be tried out as essentially a point forward in the NBA.

He has a great handle, although his 3.6-to-2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio is a bit ominous. Let’s see how he does while hopefully feeding Wilson for endless lobs.

Noa Essengue, the No. 12 pick in last summer’s draft, essentially redshirted his 2025-26 rookie season.

Splitter has hinted that he could slot Essengue in anywhere from the small forward to center positions this season. He has the length and size to play the five-spot, although he’s still a bit skinny to really hold his own against big interior players.

Can he be enough of a shooting or scoring threat to become a mismatch nightmare along the wing? That remains to be seen.

As currently comprised, Chicago still lacks 3-point shooting.

That seems to have been the top issue new Bulls executive vice president of basketball operations Bryson Graham has strived to address with his undrafted free agent signings.

Two-way guard Jaylin Sellers, reported Exhibit 10 addition Grant Newell, and reported two-way signing Houston Mallette (although the Bulls haven’t confirmed his contract yet) can all connect from distance.

Sellers, though, has the best shot at making a splash. He is an elite 3-point marksman, having connected on 39.2 percent of his 4.1 triple takes across his five collegiate seasons spanning three franchises. Outside of an outlier 29.7 percent season of shooting from distance at Central Florida, he never shot worse than 40 percent from long range at the NCAA level.

Can Northwestern Legend Boo Buie Play His Way Onto An NBA Roster?

Chicago’s Summer League roster boasts plenty of fascinating pro prospects. Boo Buie, one of the most prolific guards in Northwestern Wildcats men’s basketball history, is the obligatory homer signing.

Buie, a great defender in his Evanston days, won the coveted Lefty Driesell Award as a senior in 2023-24. He was also a two-time All-Big Ten First Teamer. The 26-year-old went unselected in the 2024 NBA Draft, and instead has been toiling in the G League and the Chinese Basketball Association. He’s been with the CBA’s Xinjiang Flying Tigers this year.

Across 13 contests with the Flying Tigers this year, Buie averaged 12.0 points on .424/.313/.774 shooting splits, 3.9 assists, and 3.6 rebounds.

Whether Buie can find a spot on this crowded young Bulls roster remains to be seen. His Summer League play is less about strutting his stuff for Chicago specifically and more about finding a two-way slot anywhere in the league.
