Long Beach Medical Center has also adopted the technology, making MemorialCare the first health system to introduce the da Vinci 5 to the Long Beach and Fountain Valley communities.
The rollout of this technology underscores MemorialCare’s leadership in surgical innovation and its commitment to reinvesting in the community by offering advanced, minimally invasive options backed by proven quality metrics.
“The da Vinci 5 is a game-changer for both surgeons and patients,” said Liz Acord, vice president of clinical institutes at MemorialCare. “It offers greater control, better visualization, and streamlines workflow, all of which lead to better outcomes and an improved surgical experience.”
Enhanced capabilities
Developed by Intuitive Surgical, the da Vinci 5 represents the company’s most advanced robotic platform to date. The system features 10,000 times more computing power than its predecessor, allowing for real-time feedback, complex tasks, and integration with digital tools that support surgical precision, training and analytics.
With more than 150 design enhancements, the platform offers next-generation 3D imaging, advanced tremor and vibration control for smoother movements, and Force Feedback technology that enables surgeons to sense and measure pressure applied to tissue. Preclinical trials have shown that the system reduces force by up to 43 percent compared to earlier models.
“This is a significant advancement in robotic-assisted surgery,” Acord said. “In the past, robotic surgery offered visualization only. Now surgeons can feel the pressure of what they’re doing, which adds a new dimension of safety and precision.”
Patient-focused innovation
The technology is expected to benefit patients undergoing procedures in more than nine specialties, including gynecology, gynecologic oncology, urology, bariatrics, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, general surgery, and colon and rectal surgery—and cardiac surgery beginning in 2026.
MemorialCare officials said more than 120 surgeons across its three hospitals are trained in robotic-assisted surgery, and many have years of experience using earlier da Vinci systems. Thousands of procedures have already been performed at MemorialCare locations using robotic platforms.
“The da Vinci 5 elevates that capability, bringing new levels of precision, comfort, and care to our patients,” Acord said.
Surgeon comfort and workflow
In addition to patient benefits, the new system introduces ergonomic improvements for surgeons. An adjustable console allows for better posture and accommodates a range of body types, including pregnant surgeons. The platform also integrates built-in insufflation, an electrosurgical unit and a universal interface accessible by both the surgeon and operating room staff.
“These advancements help streamline procedures and enable our surgical teams to focus more on patient care and less on setup or coordination,” Acord said.
Seamless integration
The da Vinci 5 will complement MemorialCare’s existing da Vinci Xi and X systems. Most surgical instruments are cross-compatible, allowing teams to integrate the new technology without disrupting ongoing surgical care.
By adopting the fifth-generation da Vinci system, MemorialCare said it will expand access to minimally invasive surgery for patients in Orange and Los Angeles counties while maintaining its reputation as a regional leader in robotic-assisted procedures.
