REPORT: Willson Contreras Traded to the Red Sox

Hello! Big-time trade alert, featuring a former Cub (Willson Contreras), one of the Cubs regular-season rivals (the Cardinals), and one of the Cubs’ biggest sources of offseason competition, the Boston Red Sox! According to MLB insider Jeff Passan, the St. Louis Cardinals have traded first baseman Willson Contreras to the Boston Red Sox tonight.

Let’s get into that!

Willson Contreras to the Red Sox

First things first, there’s no real surprise here from the perspective of the Cardinals. They are entering a deep and total organizational rebuild, and nobody is nailed down. In fact, the Cardinals and Red Sox got together on a trade for Sonny Gray earlier this offseason, so this isn’t even the first major trade between these two organizations this winter! You can expect more players to be traded away throughout the offseason, most notably from here, Brendan Donovan.

There was a bit of a flip-flop from Willson Contreras, who first said he didn’t want to be traded before eventually walking it back.

In all likelihood, the Cardinals are going to be quite bad (by design) in 2026. That’s not a bad thing for the Cubs.

Likewise, a reminder: Willson Contreras is a first baseman now. And although the defense generally rates out pretty poorly, he’s continued to hit quite well throughout his time in St. Louis.

    2023: .264/.358/.467 (127 wRC+); 20 HRs 2024: .262/.380/.468 (141 wRC+); 15 HRs in 84 games 2025: .257/.344/.447 (124 wRC+); 20 HRs

So he’ll be playing first base for the Red Sox. The question now is whether the Red Sox consider this their requisite “big bat” addition, or if they’ll still be heavily pursuing Alex Bregman in free agency (for third base) or Ketel Marte in trade (for second). Obviously, given the Cubs’ overlapping pursuit of Bregman, we like to think this is it. But trading for Willson Contreras does not categorically take them out on adding another infielder.

As for the timing of the deal, it’s plausible the Red Sox were hanging around Munetaka Murakami’s market, also considering him for first base, before he signed with the White Sox earlier today. So maybe that deal was what it took to get this one over the edge.
