ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The weekend before Christmas is one of the busiest travel times of the year. AAA predicts nearly 110 million people will travel by car for the holidays. This marks a 2% increase from last year. But is your car prepared to hit the highway?
Paul Marone with East Avenue Auto Repair encourages drivers to plan safe rides to avoid roadside emergencies. He says to watch out for certain things.
“If the check engine light is on get that looked at before going on a long trip,” Marone said.
Marone also recommended checking the antifreeze level, ensuring the windshield washer is full, and confirming that the windshield wipers work correctly.
“Make sure that the antifreeze level is correct in the car, the windshield washer is full, and the windshield wipers are working correctly,” Marone said.
Are your tires worn out? Marone recommends all season tires. One way to check is with a penny.
“If the head goes in there a little bit then you got a decent groove in the tire,” said Marone. “If its way back out here where we can see all of Lincoln then the tire is probably worn out.”
Marone says it’s important to stay updated on the weather before you hit the road. It’s something that impacted Colin Muley. He’s been driving with his family since Wednesday, heading to Rome all the way from Missouri.
“We hit the middle of Ohio and we started hitting all the lake effect snow and everything like that we were kind of blinded,” Munley said.
Between snow tires, chains, wiper blades and batteries, there’s lots to consider when winterizing a vehicle and it could be the difference between a safe drive and a disaster.
Talhatul Rahat, traveling from Buffalo, had his mechanic check his car before heading to New York City.
“Checked the tires, brake conditions, the fuel gas you know those things. Everything is fine. And we prepared ourselves to travel to NYC,” Rahat said.
Experts advised having tools like a snow brush, a blanket, and jumper cables in the car. Daniel Stedman, traveling seven hours to see his son, said he is prepared for any situation.
“I have a full tool set with wrenches and screwdrivers,” Stedman said.
