Former India spinner Maninder Singh described Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's dismissal on his international debut as a result of nerves. The former cricketer shared his views after the teenage batter's first appearance for India in the second T20I against England, saying the youngster looked affected by the occasion.
India scored a total of 190 after winning the toss at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester on Saturday, July 4. However, the Harry Brook-led team chased down the target with four wickets in hand to take the lead in the five-match series. Debutant Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made 14 before being stumped off Will Jacks.
Maninder Singh said that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi should have made his international debut during the Ireland series. He felt the youngster could have overcome his early nerves before facing a stronger opposition.
"He should have been played in Ireland itself because of the rhythm he was in, the form he was in. If these failures had happened in the Ireland series, by the time he came here, he might have understood and that nervousness would have gone. Because of the way he played his shot, that was not Vaibhav Suryavanshi's shot. That was a shot of nervousness," Singh said on ANI.
"There will be nerves. Even the big players get nervous, and he is just a 15-year-old kid. He is playing with men, he is competing with men," he added.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became the youngest player to represent India in international cricket at the age of 15. The left-handed opener earned his place after impressive performances in age-group cricket and domestic tournaments.
On debut, he showed his fearless approach by hitting Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue for a six each. He scored 14 off 10 balls and shared a 50-run opening stand with Abhishek Sharma.
Indian Cricket Lovers Need to Have Patience - Maninder Singh
Maninder Singh urged fans to stay patient with the teenage batter. He said that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is a rare talent who can win matches on his own and has the fearless mindset needed to succeed in modern white-ball cricket.
"All Indian cricket lovers need to have patience because he is a talented cricketer. He is an impact player. Whenever he plays, he will create such an impact that he will win the match single-handedly. So I am not too worried. Because he is a brave player and white-ball cricket today is a game of the brave, Vaibhav Suryavanshi is one of them," said Maninder Singh.
The teenager first grabbed attention with a 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025. He followed it with a sensational IPL 2026 campaign, scoring 776 runs at a strike rate of over 237 while setting a single-season record with 72 sixes.
Sanju Samson's Omission Sparks Debate
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's debut came after India dropped wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson from the playing XI. Samson lost his place following a poor run of scores during the Ireland and England series.
The batter managed scores of 5 and 0 in Ireland before scoring just 1 in the first T20I against England at Durham. However, the decision drew criticism from former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar, who questioned dropping Samson after his strong IPL 2026 season.
Samson scored 477 runs in 14 IPL matches at an average of 43.36 and a strike rate of 165.62, including two centuries. He was also named Player of the Tournament at the 2026 T20 World Cup after scoring 321 runs in five innings at an average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.37.
India will look to level the five-match series when they take on England in the third T20I at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Tuesday, July 7.
