ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Some local and state leaders are sharing their thoughts after Rochester Police say three officers were shot while responding to a domestic scene Friday night on Chili Avenue near Thurston Road.
RPD Chief David Smith says officers responded to reports of a man breaking into the house of his ex-girlfriend, possibly with a gun, around 10:15 p.m. Friday.
When officers got to the scene, they found the suspect on the side of the house — that’s when bullets started to fly.
Chief Smith says the suspect pulled out a gun and starting shooting at officers and the victim. RPD officers and the victim shot back, and the victim was shot multiple times.

Rochester Mayor Malik Evans
Evans joined Chief Smith for the initial media update on Friday night. At around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Evans released the following statement:
“Last night, officers from the Rochester Police Department once again put their lives on the line to protect our city and its residents. Three of our city’s finest are, by the grace of God, in stable condition after being shot multiple times, and the victim is also in non-life threatening condition.”
I am deeply grateful for our officers’ heroism and thankful to their fellow officers, our law enforcement partners, and other first responders for their efforts to secure the scene and save lives.
I also must recognize the real cost that domestic violence plays in our city and our nation. All signs point to this situation being fueled by anger between people who know each other. And the outcomes last night once again illustrate that domestic violence is not a private issue, it is a public crisis.
So, while we pray for the victims’ full recoveries and actively cooperate with multiple investigations into the details of last night, I also voice my continued commitment to the prevention of and intervention in domestic violence, and to tackling the proliferation of illegal guns in our community.”
Gov. Kathy Hochul
Hochul posted a statement on X, saying “Our police officers put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities.”

Horrific events unfolded Friday night in Rochester. My prayers are with the injured officers, the civilian victim, and their families. This level of senseless violence against law enforcement is unacceptable. Criminals who believe there are no consequences threaten the safety…
— Rep. Claudia Tenney (@RepTenney) December 20, 2025Monroe County District Attorney Brian Green
Green, who was sworn in as Monroe County DA in September, issued the following statement just before 11 a.m. Saturday:
“We often speak about the service and sacrifice of our law enforcement officers. Last night’s violent shooting underscores why those words matter. Rochester Police Officers responded to a domestic call for service, a call made in the interest of protecting others, and three officers were shot in the line of duty. The entire Monroe County District Attorney’s Office stands with the Rochester Police Department and wishes each of the injured officers a full and speedy recovery.
Violence directed at those who serve our community by putting themselves in harm’s way is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. The officers of the Rochester Police Department represent the very best of law enforcement, and they deserve the support of our community.”
Monroe County Executive Adam Bello
County Executive Adam Bello released the following statement:
“My prayers are with the three Rochester police officers who were shot while responding to a domestic incident late Friday night, and also with the victim of the domestic violence incident. This senseless violence against those who serve to protect us is profoundly troubling to our entire community. The officers were doing their jobs and came under fire while trying to help someone in need, a responsibility they carry out with courage and bravery.
Incidents like this underscore the risks our police officers face every day in service to the public, and they deserve our respect and support as they work to keep our neighborhoods safe. I amalso grateful for other responding police officers, first responders, and medical personnel whoacted quickly and courageously in a chaotic and dangerous situation to assist and save the livesof these officers.
This is a time to come together as a community, reject violence in all its forms, and reaffirm ourshared commitment to our police officers, public safety, and the rule of law.”
