Sonora boys basketball clamps down on defense to hold off Huntington Beach

LA HABRA — The Sonora boys basketball team built a double-digit lead in the second quarter of its nonleague game against Huntington Beach played on at Sonora High School. Huntington Beach made a run early in the third to get to within three.

That’s when the Raiders, who are ranked No. 21 in Orange County, clamped down on defense, quickly built the lead back up and came away with a 70-57 victory.

The contest was part of the third annual Challenge for CHOC, a two-day showcase event that raises money and awareness for the Children’s Hospital of Orange County.

Guards Tyler Holmquist and Jayden Barnes have been the one-two punch for the Raiders (9-4) on offense all season, Sonora coach Mark Murphy said, and that was the case against the Oilers (6-5).

Barnes, a junior, and Holmquist, a senior, finished with 19 and 15 points, respectively.

“They’ve been phenomenal all year,” Murphy said. “Those two guards, they’re averaging close to 50 points between them every game. And it’s very efficient. They usually get 25 points on 13 or 14 shots, so they’ve been really good for us all year.”

Holmquist also had six rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

Sonora had 17 steals as a team, one reason the Raiders were able to respond to the Oilers’ 8-3 run early in the third with a 12-3 run of their own to take a 14-point lead into the fourth quarter.

“We started to play better defense,” Murphy said. “So far this year, our weakness has been our defense and normally that’s a strength for us here at Sonora. But we really spent all week working hard on our defense and I thought we had a really good plan and they implemented it.”

Two free throws from the Oilers’ Jonah Kim followed by a basket from teammate Wyatt Unger cut the Raiders’ lead to 11 with four minutes, 40 seconds remaining in the game.

But the Oilers, who were led by 15 points from Kim, never got any closer.

Both Holmquist and Barnes came into the game nursing injuries, Murphy said.

“We’ve had some guys banged up,” he said, “but we came out in the second half and we did a really good job on defense getting out of transition, running and getting easy buckets so it’s a good win.”
