ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) – Friday night was the 25th annual Rainbow Classic with Pittsford Mendon and Pittsford Sutherland battling in girl’s and boy’s basketball and the schools raising money for the Golisano Children’s Hospital.
On the court, it was Pittsford Sutherland taking both games. The girl’s team won 49 to 40, followed by a 58 to 48 win by the boy’s team. But win or lose, this game means a lot more than a final score.
The game was inspired by former Pittsford student Katelyn Pasley, who passed away from Leukemia. A few years later, Ryan McCluskey, a Sutherland grad, passed away from a neuromuscular disease. Ever since, they’ve been remembered at this game, money has been raised, and basketball has been played.
“It’s for a great cause. Bringing Pittsford together upon rivalry between two schools, I think it’s a really good friendship rivalry,” said Pittsford Mendon girl’s basketball player Leena Mobeen.
Coaches and players agreed they look forward to the game continuing. It has raised over $600,000 since it started.
