Another trade. Things are definitely shaking out today.
This time it’s Rays righty Shane Baz going to the Orioles for prospects, per Ken Rosenthal:
Orioles are in serious discussions with Rays on a trade for right-hander Shane Baz, sources tell @TheAthletic. Rays would acquire prospects in return.
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) December 19, 2025RHP Shane Baz, heading from Rays to Orioles, was 12th overall pick by Pirates in 2017. Went to Rays in Chris Archer trade. Underwent Tommy John in Sept. 2022 and missed all of ‘23. Made 31 starts in his first full season back last season. Three years of club control remaining.
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) December 19, 2025Because of the three-team trade with the Pirates and Astros, I’m guessing this trade is semi-pending for the Rays. They may not want to make it officially official until the other deal is done and fully through the medical review process.
Baz, 26, hasn’t quite yet lived up to his considerable prospect hype, but he does fall into that “controllable starter” category of possible trades. In other words, I wonder if this (1) means the Orioles are done adding starting pitching, which would be significant for both the trade market and free agent market; and (2) other moves are about to/continue to shake loose. For all we know, this was a response to the Michael King signing, if the O’s had otherwise been in on him.
The O’s and Marlins obviously had been closely connected on controllable starter Edward Cabrera, who had also reportedly been a Cubs target.
UPDATE: Jeff Passan has the trade return:
Trade news: The Baltimore Orioles are acquiring right-hander Shane Baz from the Tampa Bay Rays for outfielder Slater de Brun, catcher Caden Bodine, right-hander Michael Forret, outfielder Austin Overn as well as a Competitive Balance Round A pick, sources tell ESPN.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) December 19, 2025Yowsa. That’s actually a really big return for the Rays. It’s a volume approach, sure, but the Comp A pick is very valuable, de Brun just signed out of this year’s draft for $4 million, Bodine just signed out of this year’s draft for $3.1 million, Forret is a legit top-20-ish system prospect, and Overn is at least a top-30. Wow. That’s a freaking haul, and is clearly contemplating Baz’s considerable upside, paired with the three cheap years of control.
I don’t particularly like to think about the equivalent price tag for the Cubs in a Cabrera or MacKenzie Gore deal.
