The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is likely to take charge of the Multan Sultans franchise in the PSL after its former owner, Ali Tareen, announced that he would be parting ways with the franchise. PCB will take control for one season.
There has been a constant tiff between the PSL franchise Multan Sultan owner and the Pakistan Cricket Board over the renewal of their PSL contract.
Recently, the PCB announced the window for hosting the 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League. This time around as well, the proceedings have been pushed backwards by the ICC T20 World Cup, and hence, it will clash with the IPL.
The Pakistan Cricket Board, headed by the current chief Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the interior minister in Pakistan, announced taking control of the Pakistan Super League franchise, the Multan Sultan, after its private ownership ends this year on the 31st of December.
According to Pakistani media, a meeting shall soon be held to discuss the policy on this matter. PCB will manage the Multan Sultans for a year before handing over the franchise to the rightful owners by conducting an auction ahead of 2027.

As the handover might take place ahead of 2027, the arrangement could be of great benefit to the PCB, as they could save approximately $4 million for that year, and it would not be required to pay the $3 million from the central revenue pool.
The PCB would also save quite some amount of money, as they would also not have to pay the additional $1 million in sponsorship funds. However, a report from the audit firm noted that the PCB would waive the franchise fee for that year, which is near about $8.5 million.
Back in November, the former owners of the Multan Sultan side decided to part ways after the long-strained relationship between the owner and the PCB could not be resolved.
Multan Sultans' owners in the past
The Multan Sultans were the sixth and the final team to be drafted into the PSL, and originally the contract was owned by Schon Group under a $5.2 million agreement, which made it the most expensive franchise, as the money was twice the amount received for the Karachi Kings.
However, soon after the season, the Schon Group realized that the deal was not a viable deal, and hence, after franchise payments were not made, the Pakistan Cricket Board decided to terminate the deal.
Alamgir Tareen and his nephew, Ali Tareen, then took over the ownership of the franchise in December 2018 for a whopping $6.3 million, and slowly, they crafted the franchise as one of the dominant forces in the league.
