Emily in Paris Season 5 Finale Ending Explained

WARNING! This article spoils the events of Emily in Paris Season 5, now available for streaming in its entirety on Netflix. Please do not read further if you do not intend to know what happens across the 10-episode season.

Emily in Paris Season 5 took fans on quite an adventure, starting in Rome, Paris, Venice, and finally, back to Paris.

But was there a happy ending in Emily Cooper's (Lily Collins) future? Did all her hard work for the Muratori line pay off?

Here’s everything to know about the ending of Emily in Paris Season 5.

    In Muratori We Trust

The final episode of the season, Emily in Paris Season 5 Episode 10, saw Emily in Venice, accompanying her boyfriend, Marcello Muratori (Eugenio Franceschini), in support of his fashion line's debut at Venice Fashion Week.

A lot was riding on the debut being a success. Agence Grateu was hired for the marketing, but Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) and Nico (Paul Forman) were personally betting their life savings on Marcello Muratori, the company, being well received by the public.

The odds were stacked against Marcello and Nico, both of whom left their family's respected fashion houses to start their own business, with Marcello's mother, Antonia, suing him in the process for trademark infringement.

Nico, who left JVMA to prove to Mindy (Ashley Park) that he was a changed man, was locked out of his trust, investing all his money into the collection's launch. As for Sylvie, her assets were being seized by debt liquidators after her husband, Laurent (Arnaud Binard), made a series of bad financial decisions that were now her problem.

Locking in a top-tier venue where guests could arrive via gondola was a promising first step for the show, but it quickly took a turn for the worse when a high-water natural phenomenon caused by a full moon flooded the space.

With everything else completely booked up, Emily did what she does best—she pivoted. And saved the day. Instead of fighting the flood, they were going to embrace it, running around the city to buy up all the rain boots to give to their guests upon entry.

Even the models donned rainboots and ponchos, before ripping them off and showcasing Marcello's colorful designs, creating a splash–literally—in the process. The show was well received, with even Marcello's mother attending and accepting her son's destiny as a designer, just like his late father, publicly resigning from the company and giving him the reins.

Marcello Muratori was now the "new head and bright future of the House of Muratori."

Emily's Future With Marcello Does Not Shine Bright Like a Diamond

These sudden changes threw a wrench in Emily's future life plans. Before the show, she found a diamond engagement ring tucked away in Marcello's belongings and naturally assumed he was going to propose.

And it seemed perfect as he was going to work on his fashion line in Paris. That all changed, however, when his mother gave him the keys to the castle, quite literally, as she told him that she would be gifting him and Emily the family home in Solitano. And that meant moving everything to Solitano.

That's when Emily realized that if she wanted a future with Marcello, she had to give up the life she was building for herself in Paris.

Marcello told her that they would "build a life together" and the "best fashion company" together in the dreamy small town, and while Emily was overwhelmed, she was also shocked to get Sylvie's blessing.

Sylvie pushed Emily toward taking Marcello's offer, telling her that she would be running an empire in-house, and even shedding tears at the thought of no longer working together, admitting that she was "lucky" to have had her for all these years. Emily finally broke Sylvie!

But Sylvie's motivations were also fueled by the news that Agence Grateu would either be sold or liquidated, as her company was, in her own words, "sinking faster than Venice," and she wanted to spare Emily the heartache.

The next day, however, as Emily believed Marcello was finally going propose, she realized how she truly felt—she can't couldn't move with him to Solitano.

"It's a beautiful dream, but it's just not mine," she told him. No matter how much she loved him, Emily chose herself.

Mindy's Ring Further Fuels a Nico or Alfie Love Triangle

As for the ring, well, it wasn't ever hers—Marcello was holding it for Nico, who proposed to Mindy on the gondola, as she declared, "yes, oui, si!"

It was a convincing response, partially because Mindy was trying to convince herself.

Except she wasn't being completely honest with herself, as she was still harboring feelings for Alfie (Lucien Laviscount), Emily's ex, whom she hooked up with several times throughout the season. She tried to play it off as just a "vacation fling," but it was clear every single time the two of them were together that it was much more.

Back in Paris, when Mindy ran into Alflie, and he saw the ring, he couldn't fake being happy for her, nor would he congratulate her on the engagement.

"Most I can do is good luck, I think you're making a big mistake," he said, unable to hide his disappointment.

And that's when Emily realized the gravity of their feelings for one another, as Mindy questioned, "Oh my god, what am I doing?"

    Agence Grateu Gets #Sponsored

Emily's return to Paris also revealed the future of Agence Grateu. Never one to back down without a fight, Sylvie welcomed Emily back with open arms before informing her that to keep the agency's doors open, she had to make some unexpected changes and bring on an "equity partner to keep us afloat."

Emily's worst fears then came to life as Princess Jane (Minnie Driver), Sylvie's longtime friend from Rome, who was responsible for plenty of chaos in the first half of the season that ultimately cost them the Rome office, was revealed as the "co-head of Agence Grateu" after coming into some money following her husband's death and a deal with the Four Season's to turn the Palazzo into a the first Four Seasons Palazzo.

"F--k, this is gunna be fun," she declared, popping open the prosecco, but she's likely the only one who seems to think so.

    Gabriel in Greece

As for Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), he left Paris rather abruptly after quitting his job as the head chef at Antoine's (William Abadie) restaurant to work for billionaire Thomas Heatherton as a chef on his yacht.

While it seemed as though he and Emily put their love story in the rearview during their meet-up halfway through Season 5, when he was given a three-week break to spend in Greece, and got a text from Sylvie at the same time informing him that Emily was back in Paris and had broken up with Marcello, he saw his golden opportunity. He sent Emily a postcard inviting her to spend time with him in Greece, but will she?

Will the next season take Emily to yet another picturesque European country? Because I'm more than available for a little Emily in Greece tour!

We'll have to patiently wait for Emily in Paris Season 6 to find out if Emily and Gabriel will finally get their moment to stand in the sun.
