Chicago-area Jewish community finds strength during Hanukkah after Bondi Beach attack

The Bondi Beach shooting suspect is now charged with 15 counts of murder following a shooting that left 15 people dead and injured dozens more at a Hanukkah celebration in Australia.

“It’s so, so unfortunate to see these lives lost,” said Rashel Allswang, a member of Chicago’s 3G organization, referring to the “third generation” of Holocaust survivors. “It is just another push to light [and] to continue doing things to keep my tradition alive.”

Allswang’s grandparents, Rebeca (Riva) Faidengold Zabner from Yedenitz, Romania, and Baruch (Bernardo) Zabner from Ostrowiec, Poland, both survived the Holocaust and moved to Venezuela.

“They each had families before who were murdered [in the Holocaust] and they decided to start anew when they met in Venezuela,” she said.

Her grandfather died before she was born, but through her grandmother she learned strength and pride in her Jewish heritage.

“That was her message, to always be proud of your roots and be resilient,” she said.

But for the past several Hanukkah seasons the holiday has been marred by tragedy. First the Oct. 7 terrorist attack at the Nova music festival and the hostage situation that ensued, and now that harrowing Bondi Beach attack at a Hanukkah celebration.

Wednesday marks the fourth night of Hanukkah where growing light meets darkness, symbolizing courage and compassion.

“Every time I light, every night, I’m lighting for them,” Allswang said.

As the candles burn brighter with each passing night, so does a promise passed from generation to generation, to keep tradition alive and find the courage to overcome tragedy.

“This is now, more than ever, another message – even in 2025 we are going to stay strong and we’re going to be proud to be who we are,” she said. “It gives me courage to have these moments of reflection and carry my grandparents’ story, and look at my girls and do it for them. This is why we’re here.”
